CHAPTER SEVEN

AS she sat waiting for the next patient to arrive, Cathy had a few moments to reflect on the situation between herself and Yannis. Three weeks had passed since they’d spent that weekend on the boat together.

It had been idyllic until the whole atmosphere had changed at suppertime in the tiny galley. She’d finally come to her senses and stopped the role play that had allowed her to be so provocative. She knew she’d gone over the line she’d drawn for herself and was in danger of history repeating itself. When she’d heard Yannis beginning to say his wife’s name she’d known she’d been a fool—again!

She remembered how she’d lain awake, feigning sleep when Yannis had finally come to bed. Before he’d arrived she’d heard him going out on the deck, probably staying there until he felt it was safe to come into the cabin.

And when Rose had woken up crying in the middle of the night she’d known that Yannis had almost been relieved that they could focus all their attention on the distraught child. Cathy had checked her daughter’s temperature. They’d both agreed it was slightly raised and that they would head back to Ceres harbour in the morning.

Cathy had suspected that the heat of the cabin and the unfamililiarity of the surroundings were causing this slight discomfort to her daughter. And she’d guessed that Yannis had also come to the same conclusion and had been glad of the excuse to get back to the normality of his bachelor freedom.

“Kali mera, Cathy.”

She smiled as her next patient was wheeled into her small office.

“Kali mera, Ariadne. So, how’ve you been since I last saw you?”

She took Ariadne’s notes from the nurse who’d wheeled her in. She knew already from her perusal of the state of Ariadne’s health on the computer that there was a further problem with this mother of three. She had symphysis pubis caused by the loosening of the ligaments which held the pubic bones in their correct position.

“I’ve had a lot of pain, Cathy.”

Cathy watched her patient as she clutched the sides of her wheelchair. She didn’t look at all well. She glanced at the results of the ultrasound scan she’d had that morning, which had taken longer than expected and was the reason she’d had some time to herself just now.

Cathy took a deep breath as she read the scribbled notes Yannis had put at the bottom of the page. Apparently, he’d been called to look at Ariadne’s scan and was on his way to discuss the best course of action.

“Under the circumstances it would be unwise to allow the pregnancy to continue,” he’d written.

What did he mean? Was he contemplating….?

“Yannis!” She looked up from the notes as he arrived.

“I was in Theatre when I got called down here to Ariadne’s ultrasound. I’ve got to go back but I thought we should discuss this.”

He smiled at their patient. “How’s the pain now, Ariadne? Any better since I gave you the painkiller?”

Ariadne shook her head. “I don’t know how much more I can take, Yannis.
