With Vaughn’s and Stixx’s assistance, I limp into the clubhouse through the back entrance. They sit me down at Mark’s desk, propping my leg up onto another chair. Everyone rushes into the tiny room, Cliff shoving through the throng of men.

“What happened?” he demands, glaring at Vaughn. He bends down in front of me, examining my leg.

“It wasn’t his fault, babe. I underestimated that little fucker.”

Shannon brings over a bottle of whiskey and pours me a shot. I hesitate. This isn’t a good time to get drunk. Besides, it doesn’t hurt that bad.

“We need a doctor,” Stixx says.

“What the fuck happened out there?” Cliff stands and takes a step toward Vaughn.

“Holy shit.” Mercy limps into the room, favoring his right hip. He bends down stiffly in front of me, peeling up the leg of my jeans. My leg is a raw mess of dirty bruises. “Who did this?”

I lift my shirt, showing him my ribs. “These probably need your attention more.”

Cliff’s face darkens. Lunging forward, he seizes Vaughn by his hoodie. “You were supposed to look out for her!”

“Anything else you wanna tell us?” Ravage demands of Stixx.

Everyone starts talking at once, the voices of nine men canceling each other out, drowning my thoughts. I try to take a breath deep enough to yell at them, to tell them to knock it off. A piercing pain stifles my voice.

My eyes meet Mercy’s. He must see the startled distress in them, because he takes my hand. “It’s okay, sweetie.”

Shannon pushes the shot toward me and steps over to the light switch. She flashes the lights several times. “Everybody shut up!”

The room falls silent.

“I’ve got a strip club full of customers out there, and I’m not dealing with any cops tonight. Got it?”

Everyone nods.

“Good.” She nods to Mercy.

He looks at Stixx. “Go get the first aid kit.” Turning back to me, he gives me a gentle smile. “I think you might have a fractured rib, kiddo.”

I glance down at the mottled purple and red covering my ribs. “I think you might be right.”

“Todd, get the rest of them out of here.”

It takes me a second to remember he’s talking to Ravage. Todd. It sounds so normal. I chuckle, and it hurts. A lot. If I ever get my hands on that kid again, he’s dead.

“Church,” Ravage tells the rest of the club. “Now.” He shepherds them out with a thick finger pointed toward the storage room across the hall.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Cliff returns to my side, taking my hand.

I blink away tears. I don’t want to shut out Cliff. If I have fractured ribs—and I’m pretty sure I do, judging by the pain—I’m going to have to go to the emergency room.

Our club needs him right now more than I do.

“Go,” I tell him, forcing a smile. “I’m in good hands.”

“You were supposed to be in Vaughn’s hands,” he mutters. He brings my hand to his lips, laying a kiss on my cold skin.

“It’s not his fault. Shit just kinda hit the fan, as usual.
