CHAPTER 51

THE ACCOMPLICE

Nolan Price slowly rubbed lotion into his hands, over and over, as he stared into the long, framed mirror that hung over the sink. This bathroom was the first remodel they had done, and was thanks to the Iverson money, which had discreetly arrived on his back porch, bundles of hundred-dollar bills tucked among the packaging of a box of wine. He hadn’t yet moved in with Josie and had enjoyed a night alone where he had lined up the bundles, side by side, and just stared at them, unsure of what to do with his newfound wealth. A hundred thousand dollars, and no one, including the IRS, had known anything about it.

He’d never even told Josie where the money had come from, though his boyfriend was full of questions about Nolan’s new, carefree attitude toward spending.

Nolan hadn’t found out about Monica Kitle’s death until three months after it happened, when he looked up her name on a lark and discovered the news articles around her murder. Still unsolved, though they suspected her ex-husband. He had spent dozens of nights staring up at the ceiling, wondering what he would do if the man was arrested and put on trial for the murder. Would Nolan call the police or keep his mouth closed?

When Kerry Pepper’s name had appeared in the database, he thought about Monica, but just for a moment. Then he thought about the money. Another box. More wine. More cash. Future financial problems that would just go away.

And now she was dead and this blood was on his hands.

It wouldn’t take too much for an intelligent cop to put the pieces together. With Protect the Children being responsible for bringing Kerry to Los Angeles, and Trent Iverson supposedly killing her—they’d assume that there was a tie, given the Iverson connection to the organization. They’d look for a link between the two. And there, with his shiny red bow tie on, would be Nolan.

Nolan, we see two large cash deposits into your bank account. Where did those come from?

Nolan, what made you select Miles Pepper, even though he was much farther down on the list, compared to the other applicants?

Nolan, we’re going to need to see your phone records.

Nolan, your emails.

They would work backward from the date of the first deposit and look for other potential victims on the Protect the Children database.

He would be branded a criminal. A deadly errand boy. A serial killer’s pawn.

Josie would leave him. The charity would fire him. He would be outed to the press and handcuffed and locked away.

He stepped quickly to the toilet and raised the porcelain lid and knelt in front of the bowl, then vomited until his stomach ached and his throat burned.
