Chapter 4

The next day at the station was an ordinary day, a lot of paper work being written and perps being processed. I sat at my desk with my hands behind my head and feet kicked up, crossed on the desk. James is at his desk across from my own looking over paperwork carefully, then glancing up at me, stops and sits upright in his chair.

“And why are you smiling so hard?”

“It’s pay day,” I respond.

“And you’re happy to give all your hard earned money to bills and utilities leaving you with pretty much pennies and dimes to have in your pocket?” James asks being a smart ass. So I showed him what a smart ass really was.

“Absolutely. Hey those pennies and dimes add up.”

“Tch!” he smacks his lips. “If you did like I told you and bought a house instead of renting you would’ve been saving money a long time ago.”

“Oh wise Yoda, where would I be without your teachings and tutelage?” But as soon as I ask the question, Sampson walks by and drops a small post it on James’ desk, and acting as if nothing has happened, she keeps it moving. James slides it in the trash can beside his desk without even stopping to read what it says. So me, being curious, I reach for the trash basket. James quickly snatches the bin before my hand could reach it.

“What?” I ask James.

“Yeah what?” he says in a sarcastic tone. “What do you think you’re doing that’s what?”

“I was being a good partner, I saw you didn’t read it because you were so into the files you probably didn’t pay it any attention so-“

“So you were going to read it and let me know what it said right?” James says taking the words right out of my mouth.

“Hey, a good partner always has your back and that’s me J.T. that’s me,” I tell him joking around.

“Thanks but no thanks.” James stands to his feet and throws on his jacket. “You ready to get out of here partner? In case you forgot, we got a patrol to get to.”

“Yeah, I guess,” I replied as I stand and follow James out of the office down to the basement where the patrol car waited.

“So what was that back there?”

“…..” James remains quiet.

“The love letter back there I mean.” James’ facial expression instantly goes from its usual carefree look to one of panic and great concern as we finally make it to the squad car.

“Get in the car.” A growl comes from his lips. Me getting in on the passenger side and him behind the wheel, we take off into the south side streets of Chicago. “Look, here’s the deal, about six months-“

“Wow, a lot has happened in the past six months, I see. I was on vacation, not dead J.T.,” I said cutting him off, angry I’m seeing myself being the last to know about everything when it comes to my partner.

“Six months ago,” James continues on where he left off.
