CHAPTER SEVEN
âMUM? Why wonât they let me have any lights on?â
Samâs plaintive question nearly broke her heart but she couldnât let him know it. Kat sent up a silent prayer of gratitude that Ben had warned her what had happened but it didnât lessen the shock of the reality.
His speech was growing more slurred, too. Was that just because of the drugs heâd been on since heâd been admitted, or because of whatever was going on inside his head?
âItâs because of your headaches, sunshine,â she invented swiftly. âTheyâre hoping it will help them to go away until they can finish all their tests.â
âDoes that mean I wonât be able to watch any television?â he demanded, this time in horror. âOr read my Harry Potter?â
âBut, Sam, when your headacheâs bad, you donât like the noise of the television,â she began reasonably, abandoning that tack when she saw a mulish look curve the corners of his mouth downwards. âAnyway, when itâs not so bad, I could read Harry to you, couldnât I?â
He pondered the suggestion for a moment and she held her breath. Heâd been so proud of the fact that heâd progressed enough to read the books by himself that she was worried that he might feel that she was treating him like a baby again, having to be read to.
âWould you do all the voices, like you did for the first books when Josh was learning to read?â he bargained, with a lightening of his expression.
âIs there any other way to read Harry Potter?â she teased, giving his hand a squeeze even as she desperately wanted to wrap him in her arms and protect him from the world. He looked so pale and it was frightening what strength of analgesia it was taking to dull the pain of his headaches. If she didnât find out soon what was causing this misery, she was going toâ¦
âDr Leeman?â called a soft voice from the doorway and she looked across to see the young registrar beckoning to her.
âIâll be back in a minute,â she promised Sam, daring to brush the lightest of kisses over his childishly smooth brow even as a huge lump of terror lodged under her heart. The young man hadnât had enough experience yet to keep his thoughts out of the expression on his face. She already knew that the news she was about to hear wasnât good.
âYou try to have a sleep, sunshine, and when I come back, Iâll read the next chapter to you,â she suggested, feeling as if her heart was breaking. She couldnât lose Sam, too. She just couldnât bear it. He was so preciousâ¦a perfect mixture of the best of both of his parents who deserved to have a long and happy life. Notâ¦
âOK,â Sam agreed drowsily, gradually losing his fight against the latest dose of analgesia. âSee you in a minuteâ¦â
Kat found herself tiptoeing out of the room, although she knew that it would probably be several hours before the drugs wore off enough for the pain to rouse him again.
