The incessant ringing pierced Tonyâs brain. Grumbling, he looked over to Rachel, who was still sleeping quietly at his side. He squinted at the clockâ8:25.
Who on earth would ring his doorbell at this hour of the morning, especially on a Sunday? He put pillows on either side of the baby, and grabbed his jeans from the foot of the bed. Pulling them on, he wished heâd gotten more than three hours of sleep.
Rushing from his room, he glanced behind him, thinking about the reason heâd been awake all night, and he became aroused again.
Juliaâs door was closed, but as he started forward to the front door, he spied her coming from Rachelâs room, her hair flying around her ashen face. He reached her side. She grabbed his upper arms.
âTony. Rachelâs gone!â Tears shimmered in her eyes.
Tony was shocked momentarily, then spoke quickly. âSheâs in my room. Sheâs okay.â
Julia looked dazed, and then her stiff shoulders slumped. âOh, God. I had a dream, and then she wasnât there....â
She bit her lip and fell against him. He wrapped his arms around her, relishing the feel of her slender body, but his concern over her superseded his lust, for the moment.
âIâm sorry, honey. She was restless when I went to check on her, and I brought her to my room. Sheâs slept there all night.â He cupped her head against his chest and rocked her. âIâm sorry,â he murmured into her hair, inhaling its fruity fragrance.
She stepped back, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of the pajamas. âDonât be. I dreamt she was gone, and someone came to the house to tell me where she was. The doorbell rang, and I probably incorporated it into my nightmare.â She dried her eyes. âIâll see if sheâs okay.â
Her concern over Rachel had obviously distracted her, and sheâd forgotten to put on her flannel bathrobe. She hurried to his room, the hem of the green pajama top tapping the backs of her firm thighs, which were, indeed, at the top of long, shapely legsâbut, his imagination hadnât done them justice.
His body surged as the doorbell rang again, the sound this time followed by banging. If not for the noise at the door, he would have followed her, thrown her on his bed caveman-style and buried himself in her until... He adjusted his jeans and strode to the door, unlocking it.
âWho is it?â he bellowed at the same time as he swung it open, his frustration acute.
âMe.â Maxine stood in the doorway, the fur collar of her coat turned up to ward off the early-morning wind. She brushed past him into the foyer, bringing in the cold air. âI come bearing a peace offering.â She waved a bag in the air. âHot, fresh-from-the-oven bagels, cold cream cheese, and even a half a pound of smoked salmon.â She smiled brightly. âYou know, lox. Like you had in New York.â
âI never had lox as a kid, Maxine. It cost over twelve dollars a half a pound.â He approached, knowing she would continue in if he didnât stop her.
