Cadeyrn waved a hand at the table and produced an exquisite meal, along with several books at the other end of the table. He held out her chair for her, then slid her chair forward. Hannah looked down at her hands clenched in her lap, at how the skin stretched tight over her knuckles. I wish I knew how to say the things I feel. She looked up to see Cadeyrn leaning both hands on the table, his nostrils flaring as he fought to keep his breathing even.

“What happened?” She stood. “What can I do to help?”

“Nothing. It will pass.”

Long minutes later, he breathed more easily, and he sat across from her without a word. The circles under his eyes seemed deeper, his cheeks a little thinner, but perhaps that was merely the cool light of the fairy lights above.

Or perhaps not. After eating a moment in silence, Hannah looked up to see Cadeyrn resting his elbow on the arm of the chair, his hand covering his eyes.

He was asleep.
