I charged at Zed as soon as we left the dining room. “What was that all about in there?”
Zed raised his hands. “What was I supposed to say? That I don’t want to take you as my mate after all? That would have gone over well.”
“I can’t stick around for the rest of the month! It was only supposed to be a week!” And a week was a much safer time frame. I wouldn’t fall in love with him in a week. But a month? That was dangerous territory.
Zed stroked a hand through his long hair and sighed. “I know. I’m sorry. I’ll double your pay.”
I swallowed. That was a lot of money he was offering. No matter how this experience ended, with that kind of cash in the bag, I could finally break free and turn my life around. No more working three jobs. No more paranoia that I might get pregnant.
Still I hesitated.
Zed took a step toward me. “Is it really so horrible to be with me?”
“It’s not horrible. It’s…” Really fucking good. No other man had ever carried me to bed before. Like I was really fucking important. It was kind of hot. And it was the kind of thing that could make me fall for a guy.
It would be a really stupid thing to fall for a guy who was just using me to buy time until he found his fated mate, whoever that might be.
“I’ll have the mating annulled as soon as my parents leave the island again. They’ll never know.”
“Gee, thanks.”
“What’s wrong?”
I glared at him. “I know we’re only pretending, but you don’t have to sound like you can’t wait to divorce me.”
“That’s not how I meant it.”
“Whatever.” I took a deep breath because I knew I was being silly. “I have to call work and let them know I’ll be gone for longer.”
“Thank you. You won’t regret it.”
“Yeah,” I said and turned to leave. I really wasn’t so sure.
“Roger?”
I halted and shot him an expectant look.
“Would it help if I promised to watch all your hockey games with you?”
A grin tugged on my lips. “On your parents’ big ass screen?”
“Where else?”
“That could help. But don’t you dare root for the wrong team.”
He put his hand over his heart. “I would never.”
I smiled at him and left, my heart heavy even as I looked forward to seeing my team on the big screen. A man who wanted to watch hockey with me was definitely a man I could fall for.
One whole month.
I was fucked.
