Brock Henderson sat in his office going over Detective Cooper’s personnel file. There was something he liked about this young man. He obviously loved his job, but didn’t really like talking about it, or himself. He was a dedicated, highly decorated police officer, who was well liked by his peers and respected by his superiors. The in-house intel was that the uniform officers loved him, because he always recognized their work when done well. If they ever worked on his case, he always made it a point to notify their supervisors of their excellent work. Unfortunately there was a sad side to this man’s life. It had started several years earlier with the deaths of his parents in an automobile accident. Then, if that wasn’t enough, his wife suddenly dies from cancer last year. The man upstairs had been raining on this guy’s picnic for some time now, and yet he kept on coming to work and doing his job. No griping, no complaining; just doing.

This fella deserved a break and Henderson was hoping there was some way he could give him one. Something was missing here. He saw the scene, read all the reports, and more importantly, he had a feeling that he knew the man.

Henderson called his secretary. “Rose! Is Billy Moyers still in charge of the firearms training facility these days? If so, could you contact his office and have him call me at his earliest convenience?”

“Yes Sir, I believe he is. I’ll call right away.”

“Thank you.” he answered.

It was about twenty minutes later when Sergeant Moyers called back.

“Sorry Chief. I was on the range. What can I do for you, Sir?” He asked.

“That’s ok, Sergeant. What I would like is your file on Detective John Cooper please. We keep a complete file on all our officers’ training sessions, yes?” the Chief asked him.

“Yes Sir, we do.” The sergeant replied.

“That’s great. Could you have that file sent over to my office as soon as possible please.”

“Yes Sir. A couple of fellows from P.S.B. retrieved copies of some of the reports yesterday. Do you want those same reports, or would you like everything we have Sir?”

“Everything Sergeant, if you please, and I would appreciate your discretion on this. I wouldn’t want the investigators to think I was snooping around their investigation. This is for something entirely different. I’m sure you understand.” The Chief told Moyers.

“Yes Sir. I’ll have them in your office by noon today if that’s alright?” The sergeant inquired.

“That will be fine. Thank you, Sergeant.”

Good to his word, the file appeared at his office just before lunch.

After going to a previously scheduled luncheon, he returned, cleared his calendar and spent the better part of two hours going through all the files Rose had delivered. There were various range practices, combat scenarios and supervisor overviews and assessments throughout the jacket, and Henderson had scoured through them all, coming up empty on everything. It all read out as previously advertised; good police officer, average shooter with a pistol, but always qualified.
