Hayden Howard was sitting on the steps of the sleeping car when Tyler pulled up at Glenfinnan station. He was smoking a roll-up cigarette, which he promptly disposed of into the bushes at the sight of the detective’s car, then spent the next several seconds frantically flapping the air as he watched Tyler walking over.

“Hey, brah!” he said, jumping to his feet and rushing to close the gap. “How’s it going? Everything OK?”

Tyler sniffed, making it very clear he knew exactly what had been going on. “Fine, thanks. You?”

“Uh, great, yeah. Just… having a cigarette. No smoking inside.”

Tyler sniffed again. “Imports, are they? Smell funny.”

Hayden’s eyes flitted between Tyler’s, trying to figure out just how much the detective knew.

“Yeah. Imports. All legal, though.”

“Glad to hear it,” Tyler said. He nodded in the direction of the sleeping car. “Is Deirdrie in?”

“Deeds? Nah, brah. She went to watch the train, I think. Fucking… Harry Potter Express, or whatever it’s called. Crossing the bridge. She and Hermione used to do it all the time. It was kind of their thing, or whatever.” He grinned. “Well, that and all the hot lesbo sex, I guess. At it like rabbits, they were. But, you know, gay rabbits.”

Generally speaking, Tyler was never one to shy away from what might be described as ‘a bit of banter’. Particularly where lesbians were involved.

But sometimes, even he had to draw the line.

When he looked back on the moment later, Tyler would conclude that the words that came out of his mouth were as much DCI Logan’s as they were his own.

“One of the young women you’re talking about is dead. Show some bloody respect.”

Hayden’s face fell. He cleared his throat and nodded, looking suitably chastised. “Yeah. Shit. Sorry. Out of line,” he said. “It just… It doesn’t feel real, you know?”

“Not to you, maybe,” Tyler said.

Hayden scratched idly at a forearm and moved his weight from foot to foot. “Yeah. I’m sorry, brah. Not on,” he said. “Does her family know yet?”

Tyler nodded. “Aye. Her dad’s flying in.”

“Shit, really? Wow.” Hayden stared past Tyler for several seconds, like this was the most shocking aspect of the whole awful affair. “That’s crazy. When?”

“I don’t know. Tonight.”

“Tonight? Will we have to talk to him?”

“Not necessarily, no,” Tyler said, only half paying attention. “But I’m sure he’d appreciate the chance to meet and talk to you all. Share your memories of her. Whatever.” He gestured vaguely up the hill behind the station. “Is there a viewpoint or something?”

“Uh, yeah. But she didn’t head that way. Too many bloody tourists,” Hayden said, without so much as a whiff of irony. “She’s gone along the tracks.”

“The tracks?” Tyler looked along the railway line to where it disappeared into a thicket of trees. “Is that not dangerous?”

“Nah. I mean, sure, yeah. A bit,” Hayden replied. “But there are places to stand if you know where to go.” He saw the unimpressed expression on the detective’s face and smiled awkwardly. “I mean, it’s not like it’s illegal.
