Rudy felt the same as when he was half-dreaming, almost but not quite asleep. He attempted to wake up fully and open his eyes, but couldn’t. Tried to move, but his body would not respond. He decided that this was a dream, and so didn’t worry about it. Let himself go deeper, and was at once in Barbados, sitting at the bar of his brother’s motel, drinking white rum and listening to Hendrix on the juke. Two stools up was a big, big girl, who could’ve been the tennis player, Venus Williams. In fact it was her sister, Serena. She gave him a dazzling smile, and he knew that she was besotted by him. He was going to play a ball game with her, but rackets and a net were equipment that would not be required. The image of the Green Turtle Bar started to break up, in the way digital stations on his TV would sometimes freeze frame then disintegrate into a mass of coloured pixels. He became worried, even in his torpor. The picture didn’t return. He knew something was wrong, but didn’t know what. And he could hear voices. A male and female talking. They sounded close by. The man said he thought that the patient had suffered brain damage. The woman said a CAT scan and EEG had been scheduled.

Rudy wondered if what he could hear was real or imagined. And who they were talking about. He knew that CAT stood for; Computerised Axial Tomography, which was in essence a series of pictures taken of the brain. And that EEG was the acronym for Electroencephalogram, which recorded electrical activity in the brain. Tests like that were done to see if everything was functioning within normal parameters. Working in a psychiatric hospital had familiarised him with such terminology. He concentrated; wanted to be fully awake now, but couldn’t pull free from the languid state that he was in. Nothing. He was trapped in what he thought to be some form of cataleptic state. What had happened to him? The voices faded. He was back in paradise, strolling barefoot along a beach fronted by the Caribbean. Large palm trees swayed in a warm breeze, their fronds producing a dry rattle. Serena was walking next to him, hip to hip, her arm hung loosely around his butt. No worries.
