Chapter 16
In Love
After coming from Lowe’s in Woodlawn to pick up some supplies that I needed for the job I was about to do today, I headed over to the site of my next job. Carlos’s girlfriend, Carla, recommended me to her boss. She was a paralegal and her boss mentioned in passing that he needed something built in his house. Since Carla knew that I was a private contractor and I was her boyfriend’s best friend, she passed my information on to him. I thought that it was a really great gesture.
It was about nine o’clock in the morning when I parked my truck outside of the house I was about to work in. I sat there and looked at the neighborhood for a few seconds. It was a pretty nice one. Tall oak trees decorated the sidewalk evenly and every house had neatly manicured lawns with perfect green grass and flowerbeds in various parts of the lawn. Children rode bikes up and down the sidewalk and played in their yards. Luxury and family cars lined the cemented driveways.
The houses were fancy—modern Tudor-type you knew that important people with families lived within the four walls. It’s not that I wasn’t used to nice things, because I had my own and my mother always strived to give me the best. It’s just that the city life seemed like it moved so fast, and here it looked like life flowed smooth and easily. It looked like they had no cares in the world.
After a few seconds more, I stepped from my truck and into the yard of the Black family. I walked up to the door and knocked. A few seconds later the door opened and a beautiful lady answered the door.
“Hello, how are you today?” she greeted me. She had her hair tied up in a bun just like a schoolteacher would.
“I’m doing great. Are you Mrs. Black?” I asked.
“Call me Mona.” She smiled.
“Okay . . . Mona, I’m Kraig and I’m here to do the work your husband spoke to me about the other day.”
“Yesss . . . Kraig, come on in and I will show you to my husband’s office.”
Before I entered, I noticed a little girl behind her clinging to her leg as if her life depended on it. She peeked at me and then hid back behind her mother.
“Hi, there.” I waved at the shy little chocolate girl. She had to be about two or three years old.
“Oh, forgive Diana, she’s a little shy. We don’t get that many guests outside of family to come to the house.” She backed up and let me in their foyer.
We walked past the living room and dining room, toward the back of the house where the kitchen and her husband’s office were located.
“Here we are,” she said as we walked into his office.
“Okay, great. I’ll get started and try to be out of here in no time.”
“Take your time. If you need anything just let me know.”
“Sure will.” I looked around the office and looked at all of the diplomas and certificates he had.
