CHAPTER SIX

‘I THINK it’s way past time we went to bed.’

‘Exactly what I’ve been thinking.’ David could feel the desire flickering. If Lisa looked up and caught his eye, he was sure it would explode into an unparalleled conflagration. Look up, Lisa, he urged silently. Never mind that it was nearly midnight and they’d both been sitting in a reflective silence as they’d finished yet another cup of coffee in the staffroom. He had never felt less tired in his life.

Lisa sighed wearily. ‘You just can’t help yourself, can you, David?’

‘Sorry?’

‘Flirting.’ She did look up but her expression was a disappointment. No encouragement to fan the flames there. ‘You just can’t let any opportunity slip past. It’s as automatic for you as breathing.’

‘Some women appreciate it.’

‘Oh, I know that.’ Lisa’s glance was as speculative as her tone. ‘Don’t think I haven’t noticed the way nurses trip over themselves to be helpful. The right piece of equipment is always found, the patient’s results are always available. Your patients are always in their beds and even the cleaner keeps the vacuum cleaner away while you’re trying to examine someone.’

David grinned. He couldn’t deny it. She’d left out his secretary, though.

‘Even your secretary is a force to be reckoned with on your behalf,’ Lisa continued acerbically. ‘Do you know she pushed in front of me to get to the photocopier yesterday? Some reports that just had to be ready for you.’

‘Did she?’ David made a mental note to buy Sue a box of chocolates, while managing to look apologetic for Lisa’s sake.

‘I’m still waiting for discharge summaries which should have been typed up two weeks ago. And what about Mrs Judd?’

‘What about her?’

‘She wouldn’t let me examine her this morning. She was hanging about, clogging up the corridor with her walking frame. It all became clear when she caught sight of you and had a chat. Then she was happy enough to relinquish her post.’

‘I have not been flirting with Mrs Judd. We had a small bonding session, that’s all—over a baby.’

‘Well, it won’t wash with me, David James, I’m warning you.’

‘Why not?’ David felt genuinely curious. ‘This is a tough game, Lisa. It helps to lighten the atmosphere. You’ve got a sense of humour—I’ve heard you laughing often enough. What’s so wrong with making people feel good about themselves, maybe feel attractive and appreciated.’

‘Because you’re playing on sexuality and you target women.’

‘My inclinations have always been in that direction, I must confess.’ David couldn’t help smiling.

‘It’s chauvinistic and outdated,’ Lisa growled. ‘And it only makes it harder for women to succeed. How many female cardiology consultants do you know of, David?’

David thought hard. ‘There’s a brilliant woman at the Mayo Clinic and…ah…’

‘Exactly. It’s not an easy field for a woman. I intend to succeed, David. My career is my life. That’s why I despise flirting.’

David had a flashback to their first meeting—to his husky comment about looking forward to working with her, to his crack about breaking her heart. He could write a manual on how to get off on the wrong foot with Lisa Kennedy.
