Chapter Fourteen

Friday

Kyra parked her Range Rover at the small Martha’s Vineyard Airport and grabbed her overnight bag from the backseat. She made her way through check-in and security. After Tarek had left the house last night, she’d gone through their conversation over and over and, needing a third-party perspective from someone who knew Ed, she’d dialed Grace and Charlie. Grace encouraged her to go to Boston. Even if Detective Collins was being a stubborn jackass. Charlie’s words. Kyra knew Ed better than he did and would know more about his activities. She’d laughed at Charlie’s increasingly colorful language for the detective. There was no way in hell she was going to get caught stuck on the ferry with that stuffed-shirt, little shit though, and at Charlie’s recommendation, she’d decided to fly. Grace offered to make hotel arrangements once Kyra had the map of the cell phone pings, and they promised to check in on Cronkite while she was away.

After the rush of buying tickets, packing, and getting to the airport, now sitting at the gate waiting to board, her righteous indignation had waned. She felt stupid and impulsive. She was debating going back to the house. Then she thought of the codes on the phone. Ed could have deleted them, especially the meetings that had occurred. And what about the cloud storage company? Finding these things, these clues, it felt like they’d been left for someone. For her. She pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to rub away some of her tension.

If I’d answered his texts. If I’d come for Christmas, he might still be alive. I owe this to him to find out what happened.

Kyra bit her bottom lip and let her hand fall to her bag.

Worst-case scenario, I find nothing and spend a few days walking around Boston.

She brushed her fingers across the manilla folder containing the cell phone triangulation data. Her flight was called, and before she could talk herself out of it, Kyra boarded the plane.

Within minutes, Kyra wished she’d talked herself out of it. She white-knuckled the armrests of her seat as the tiny propeller plane dipped and swayed over the Atlantic. It rattled like it was coming apart at the seams. She glanced at the man sitting across the aisle. He clung to his golf clubs; his expression strained. If she hadn’t been petrified of plummeting into the sea, she’d have laughed. The poor man looked as terrified—and ill—as she felt.

“Don’t worry. We’ll be fine. This isn’t even bad.” The flight attendant failed to comfort the passengers from her seat at the front of the plane. “We’ll be on the ground in no time.” She gave an encouraging smile.

Kyra swallowed the urge to vomit and tried to focus on the horizon.

Not soon enough, the plane landed, and she made her way through Logan Airport. She’d beelined from the plane to the restroom to splash cold water on her face. Her neck and chest were sticky with nervous sweat. She caught her reflection in the mirror.
