- PLAYING DENTIST & ALIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY!

Moonlight illuminates the bent, rusty fire escape that frames the vigilante’s old stucco apartment building. The window is still open on the top floor. Light seeps out of it. A few seconds later, it’s followed by the sound of a saw cutting through steel. Someone is busy inside.

It’s the vigilante. He’s sitting down. His shirt is off. His body is just as bloodied and bruised as his face is. He has got one of his hands free, compliments of a hacksaw. He’s using the blade to cut through the remaining cuff. Add sweat to the mix.

Five seconds later, he’s a free man. Getting up, he stumbles into his bathroom and releases some water from the sink’s faucet. The first few seconds of the runoff are clouded with rust. He lets it clear and then begins splashing the cold stuff over his battered face. Even that hurts. The bloody water finds the drain and slowly disappears. Grimacing, he reaches into his mouth. A loose tooth. Playing dentist, he wrenches it free and then tosses the molar into the circular file.

It’s a small apartment. The bed isn’t more than ten paces away. In his condition, it takes twenty steps to reach it. Somehow, he makes it to the sack. Complete exhaustion. He collapses, alive to fight another day. Through the open window, in the distance, police sirens wail.
