I rise from the depths of my retreat once my soul is patched and healing. I might not have filled all the cracks in my heart, but I’ve wrapped enough duct tape around them to hold things together for now. Sometimes, that’s as good as it gets. My cheek is drool-slick and stuck to the leather of Nikon’s sofa. Sloan is sitting on the floor, his arm over me, his unfocused gaze clouded with dark storm clouds.

“That bad, is it?”

His attention shifts to me and emotions swirl in his gaze. There’s a flare of relief, then it’s gone, and his dark and broody takes over. “I was thinking of the adage, ‘Life never gives you more than you can handle,’ and hoping it’s true. From where I sit, some days, I can’t imagine it is.”

“Are we talking about you or me?”

“Who do ye think? I hate it when ye suffer.”

“Nothing an ugly Oprah cry and a good bottle of booze can’t handle.” I sit up and scan the room. We’re not in the war room anymore. By the massive sleigh bed and the lack of knick-knacks, I’d guess we’re in a guest suite.

“I’m sorry for my part in yer troubles today.” The pained look he flashes me is full of guilt and self-recrimination. “I know it hurts ye that I haven’t shared my plans. It isn’t because I don’t want ye to be part of them. I just didn’t want to say anything before I got it sorted. I didn’t want to jinx it.”

“Your parents did that for you.” The hurt of that convo comes back in spades. “I’ve now been elevated from unworthy, unskilled, and uneducated to the likes of a money-grubbing whore. That blindsided me. I don’t enjoy that happening.”

He curses and shakes his head. “I can explain.”

“Please do. I’d love to understand why you changed your arrangements to make the girl you’ve been dating less than two months the recipient of your financial trusts. It astounds me because…hello…we’ve been dating less than two months.”

I run my fingers through my hair and fight not to lose my mind. “Sloan. I adore you, but I’ve been really clear. My focus is on stabilizing my life as a druid. You said you understood and would support me. Now you’re living here and making me your beneficiary? That’s the exact opposite of giving me time and space to figure myself out.”

He nods. “I knew that’s how you would take it.”

“That’s why you didn’t tell me?”

“No.” He gets up off the floor and sits on the couch facing me. “Making you my beneficiary wasn’t about you. It was about me.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“Exactly.” He holds up a finger, cutting off my protests. “Please, let me explain.”

I draw a deep breath and exhale. “Fine. Go for it.”

“Last month, when Moira and her coven took me—”

I freeze. Up until now, he’s refused to talk about what happened during the time the dark witches had taken him prisoner. All I know is that they infected him with a fester bug, and it wasn’t a good time for him.
