In the basement, Jace pulled on his jeans still warm from the dryer and was tugging his T-shirt over his head when all hell broke loose upstairs. He took off at a run, barefoot, yanking his shirt down over his stomach. No weapon. They were inside a warded house, hunting a ghost. No way in hell anything could get in. But when he burst into the den he found Terry, shaken and alone, in the middle of a room that looked like a hurricane had hit it.

"Where is he? Where the fuck is Elias?" Jace turned a wing back chair back onto its feet and helped Terry into it.

"They took him."

Jace went still as death. "Say that again."

"They took him."

"Who took him?"

"Ghosts. They were everywhere. Winchell and that witch woman from the car were with them. They grabbed Elias’s wrists and the whole lot of them disappeared." Terry looked around panicked, as if he expected them to appear any second to get him.

Jace knew better. He and the boy were perfectly safe. Elena had what she came for and wouldn't be back. Jace had to save Elias but since he didn't have a clue to where they'd gone it seemed impossible. He wished for a vision, headache be damned. Unsurprisingly the symptoms of an impending episode remained absent; the useless things never came when they could help and rarely helped when they did come. Jace couldn't help wishing that the vision that saved Elias was a turning point for him. And if wishes were horses… yeah, yeah, I know Wade. You're dead so shut the fuck up, okay? Jace paced, walking over the pictures scattered over the floor without caring, and mentally sorting through the few facts they'd gathered, hoping to stumble over even a small clue. Suddenly he stopped pacing to stare at the picture lying on the floor between his bare feet and leaned to pick it up. An old farm house stood in the middle of a mostly dirt yard, surrounded by tired looking fields.

He thrust the picture at Terry. "Do you know where that is?"

"The old Winchell place?" Terry rolled his eyes. "Sure. Everyone knows where it is. It got confiscated for nonpayment of taxes after Winchell's daughter got murdered."

Jace thought for sure something had to be wrong with his hearing. Terry kept saying things that sounded like English but really didn't make sense.

"His daughter was murdered?"

"Oh yeah, when Winchell raped those girls, he hid in the back seat of their cars and attacked them at home, raping a couple of them in their beds. After he got shipped off to prison, someone hid in his daughter's car and cut her throat."

Jace fingered the picture in his hand thoughtfully. "I have a hunch. Go get your coat and shoes on Terry; I need a ride to my truck."

"Are we going there?" Terry indicated the picture. "You think that's where they took him?"

"It's a place to start and my only lead. I'm going there. Why wasn't all this crap about his daughter in the paper?"

"It didn't happen here.
