Chapter Five

McKenzie wiped his lips with the napkin. “That was delicious. I can safely say you are a great cook.”

Verity frowned. “Jeannie must take all the credit. I only followed her instructions and didn’t do a lot.”

“I heard otherwise. You’re a fast learner, according to Jeannie.” He lifted his mug and gulped down his coffee. “That tastes wonderful.”

She stared down into her lap. “I’ll learn how to make decent coffee too, I suspect.”

He glanced at her. Did his wife think that was a criticism because it wasn’t? “Your coffee is fine. These things all take time. Don’t be so tough on yourself.” He reached across the table and covered her hand with his own. “With your background, no one blames you for not knowing these things.” She scowled at him, but McKenzie wasn’t sure why. After all, what he said was the truth. Then again, sometimes the truth hurt, and the last thing he wanted to do was hurt Verity.

“How was your meal?” Jeannie interrupted them just in time.

“It was delicious as always.”

His coffee mug was refilled without asking. “What’s for dessert tonight?”

“Apple pie, blueberry muffins,” She winked at him, presumably because he’d already sampled the muffins. “And rice pudding.”

“I’ll have the apple pie, thank you. What about you, Verity?”

She glanced up at Jeannie. “I’ll have the pie too, thank you.” She took a sip of her coffee as their hostess walked away. “I feel like I should be helping her. It’s such a busy place, and she does it all alone.”

His grip tightened on her hand. “I’m certain Jeannie appreciates the help you’re giving her during the day.” McKenzie was positive it would be the case. He couldn’t recall her ever having assistance in the diner. Verity’s help would be a godsend to her.

“You’re right, of course. I’m pleased to be able to help. At first, I thought I might be a hindrance, but Jeannie said it was a massive help.”

“Of course, it was. She would be very grateful to you.”

“Here you are. Two apple pies.” Jeannie put the bowls down, one in front of each of them.

“Verity thinks she was a hindrance in the kitchen today.” His wife glared at him as heat rose in her cheeks.

Jeannie’s head shot up. “My dear girl, you were far from that. Today was the first time in ages I haven’t been stressing the entire day, trying to get everything done.”

“I’m pleased to hear it,” Verity said quietly. He’d embarrassed her, but it was better than having her feel guilty for no reason.

“Tuck in,” Jeannie said, then left them alone. McKenzie waited for his wife to admonish him, but her words never came. He didn’t take her for a wallflower, so he was pleased to have appeased her guilty thoughts.

After supper, they went for a stroll around town. Despite his deputy, Matt Collier, doing the night duty, he went to the jailhouse to check on Charlie, who was still sleeping it off. The old man was fine – he’d had an early supper before McKenzie collected Verity.
