Chapter fourteen

‘So, what do you want to talk about, Henry?’ asked Blizzard as he ushered a nervous-looking Gallen into the interview room. ‘Sit down, please.’

Gallen did as he was told, glanced round the cramped room and felt the almost physical sensation of the walls closing in on him. He eyed the inspector unhappily; he had long since ceased to trust the DCI. After their previous encounter following the closure of the Smarts factory, Henry Gallen had promised himself that he would never return to this room, that he would tell Robert that it was all over, that their arrangement could not be allowed to continue. But Gallen had been weak, he knew that, so here he was, sitting once more in the oppressive silence of the little room and recalling the nightmares that had dragged him from sleep, wide-eyed and shaking, so many times in recent months. Memories of the DCI’s steely glares across the desk, the barrage of never-ending questions, the bewildering switches of tactic that left his head spinning, the remorseless ticking of the clock on the wall as day turned to evening, which turned to night.

Sitting there now, Gallen remembered the rank smell of his own fear as the hours lengthened and recalled the welcome rush of fresh evening air when he was finally released without charge by a visibly irritated chief inspector. Sitting and staring bleakly across at the DCI as he took the seat opposite him at the table, Gallen’s mind conjured up once more his feelings of exultation as he had stumbled out of the front door at Abbey Road in February, then reminded him how quickly the feeling had been dashed when he turned to see Blizzard standing at the top of the steps, arms crossed as he watched him go. You’ll be back, the inspector’s expression had said. And now he was. Henry Gallen was back and he shuddered at the thought.

Blizzard sat and said nothing, a faint smile on his lips as he watched Gallen’s turmoil play out on his features. The inspector had long appreciated the value of silence in interviews. As he was fond of telling young detectives that there was little sense in doing the work yourself when the suspect’s mind could do so much for you. Let it play its tricks, he would say to them. So now Blizzard sat and waited until the sweat began to glisten on Gallen’s brow; the inspector loved it when they started to sweat. It was his signal to start the interview.

‘Go on then,’ he said. ‘Spit it out, Henry. What did you drag me down here for?’

‘I want to know why I’m being held.’ Gallen tried to sound bullish but his voice trembled. ‘I have a right to know.’

‘Is that all?’ Blizzard looked disappointed. ‘You’re wasting my time, son. The constable said it was something important.’

‘Yes, well it is. I’ve got to meet a client in the morning. It’s important that I see him.’

‘Allow me to enlighten you then. Tonight’s raid was about the trade in stolen goods going through The Lion.
