‘Si, I’m about half an hour away and I hope there’s a bottle open – we’ve had a foul journey down.’

‘Bottle in the fridge. Who’s we?’

‘I’m bringing an old friend back – you won’t remember Polly Attwater; we were at med school together. Her car’s being towed back home in shame by the AA and she’ll catch a train home tomorrow. So make it two bottles. How’s Sam?’

‘Are you driving as we speak?’

‘Not really, I’m stationary in a long tailback.’

‘Makes no difference, as well you know, so get off the bloody phone.’

Cat made a cross noise and disconnected.

Sam was in the doorway. ‘What will happen to Greg?’

‘Nothing.’

‘You sure about that?’

‘I am. But he had a wake-up call and I don’t think he’s going to be joining up with the Bulldogs. Don’t worry, Sambo, I wouldn’t shop him and anyway, he’s done nothing criminal, just been stupid.’

‘OK.’ But he sounded doubtful. ‘Better not tell Mum.’

‘As if . . .’

‘You on duty at the Colour Parade?’

‘It’s primarily uniform’s responsibility but I’ll be around.’

‘Brett Forrester’s dad has a flat over the bank in the square. I’m going there.’

‘Great viewpoint. Now – let’s do a bit of a sprint round the house.’

Sam groaned and went to fetch the vacuum cleaner.
