“You’re calling me a tramp? Look how you’re dressed!”

It wasn’t the most mature response, but it was my own. The woman who had just called me a tramp looked a lot trampier than me, that was for sure. At least my outfit left stuff to the imagination.

The woman ignored me and turned to Hunter instead.

“Please don’t tell me she’s from that awful Wiltz family,” she said and then gave me a sideways glance.

“Jess, stop it. Can’t you behave like a normal person for once in your life?”

“So she is, isn’t she?”

I wondered how Jess had heard of me.

“Who exactly is this?” I asked Hunter instead. It was clear that this Jess person was interested in only trading insults with me.

“Rory, this is my little sister Jess. Jess, this is my friend Rory. And you should be nice to her.”

“I knew it! She’s the one who got Carver put in jail, isn’t she?”

Jess struck a pose like she was ready for a fight, but thankfully Hunter stepped in between us.

“Carver is the only one who got himself into that situation and you know it. Rory didn’t do anything to our family.”

“But her last name is Wiltz, isn’t it?”

“As a matter of fact, yes it is,” I said proudly. “And I’ve never done anything to harm your family.”

“You Wiltz bitches are all the same,” Jess said under her breath.

“Enough,” Hunter said, his voice reverberating through the house.

Jess looked shocked and so was I.

“You’re into her, aren’t you, bro? Just like a man to be seduced by…” She looked me up and down. “Whatever this is supposed to be.”

I did not like this Jessica girl at all, and I made it clear with the look on my face.

“Is there a reason you’re here?”

“I need a reason to visit my own brother now?”

“That’s not what I meant…”

“Did I interrupt something here?”

“I’ll be on my way,” I interjected. “Thanks for your help, Hunter.”

I made sure the vial of powder was in my jacket pocket and hightailed it out of there.

Hunter tried to follow me but I stopped him. “It looks like you have your hands full here,” I said and left it at that.

Jess sneered in my direction.

I was thankful to leave the bickering siblings behind me. Too bad I didn’t have far to walk. Going across the street just didn’t seem dramatic enough under the circumstances.
