Chapter Eleven

Tuesday 17 April

‘So, how did you two get on with Rhiannon yesterday?’ asked Southall.

‘I checked out her Facebook profile so I knew the real story before we even got there,’ said Norman. ‘She’s been in touch with Rhys all along. She even went over to the US a few years ago to see him. But she swears she doesn’t know where he is right now.’

‘Do you believe her?’ asked Southall.

‘I’m not absolutely certain, but I think so,’ said Norman.

‘Do we need to bring her in?’

‘She’s going back to Warwick today on the midday train, but I’ve arranged for someone to bring her in at nine so she can make a statement.’

‘And she agreed?’ Southall asked.

‘I told her we’d arrest her if she didn’t. That seemed to persuade her. I also told her to think about where Rhys is and, if she does, whether she ought to tell us.’

‘So, you’ll be interviewing her, then.’

Norman shook his head. ‘She hates me. I think she’ll be more co-operative if you speak to her. I also think it’ll be worth leaning on her, so as to get a straight answer about Rhys.’

‘D’you think she’s involved in Gareth’s death?’

‘I doubt it,’ said Norman. ‘She says she didn’t know about the scam, and despite all her other lies, I think she really didn’t.’

‘In that case, I’ll speak to her, but I don’t want us to get too hung up on Rhiannon. If Rhys is back in the UK, I reckon, of the two of them, he is the more likely murder suspect.’

‘Okay, so what next?’ asked Norman.

‘Yesterday you said you thought Pont Daffyd was the key to this case, and I agree with you. Gareth must have had a very good reason for going there, and so far we’ve no idea what it was. I think that’s where we should focus our attention.’

‘Didn’t Rhiannon say they often went there when they were kids, because they had relatives there?’

‘Exactly,’ said Southall. ‘If I’m right about Rhys being the prime suspect, and he isn’t in the area, it might mean he has an accomplice in that village. In that case, I think we should ask Judy to go back sixty years to when they were children, and find out where the uncle lived. The surname was Jenkins. She can check with the local council, the property register and anywhere else she can think of. Let’s find out where that family are now, and if any of them still live in Pont Daffyd.’

‘What do you want me to do?’

‘Go back to Pont Daffyd. Take Catren with you, and starting at the crime scene, check out that village. Ask around again, maybe someone will recognise the name Jenkins and know where they live.’

An hour later, Norman and Morgan were standing in the small clearing where Gareth Jenkins’s body had been dumped in the stream.

‘What exactly are we looking for?’ asked Morgan.

‘If we knew that, the SOCOs would have found it,’ said Norman. He was studying the clear waters of the stream.
