Four

At least the chilling wind up here was bracing.

It danced against his face and blasted away the monumental exhaustion. His eyes opened fully for the first time in a week, and Jake wondered how he had managed to operate with little or no sleep. He couldn’t remember a night going by without laying awake throughout, and when he did occasionally snatch some sleep, he was aware he was sleeping.

There had been no rest.

And now he was walking around up here in a fug, with a thick head, heavy limbs, and a slow body.

He bent his neck back, staring up at the bright blue sky, feeling the chill of the wind caressing his Adam’s apple. He rubbed his eyes, clearing the dry crust clinging to his long lashes, and he let out a portracted, vocal groan. Then he bought his arms out from his sides and lifted his hands to shoulder height, luxuriating in the gusts of air swooshing past his body.

He need that cold to wake him now; needed it to revive his senses.

Across the rooftop, he saw two men putting the final touches to the rig. They were double-checking every anchor point, tugging ever wire to check its strength, and generally doing exactly what he was paying them to do.

The only employee up here not doing his job was Bernard; who just sat on an upended crate, staring at Jake with an admonishing look on his face

Maybe he was doing his job after all.

Jake knew he would have to listen, even if he didn’t want to hear it. And so he wandered to his butler and shuffled his feet in the gravel.

“Is this the part where I implore you not to do it?” Bernard asked, sounding more bored than angry.

“Guess so,” Jake replied with a weak but winsome smile.

“Your self destructive whims are shattering.”

“Tell me about it.”

And that was that.

Pretty lame by Bernard’s usual standards.

Jake wandered away, reaching the raised edge of the building and leaning over the precipice, looking down the thirty stories to the New York street below. Yellow cabs, long limos, and hurried people milled about in a silent dance that was always fascinating for him to see.

He turned his attention to the rig, watching the thick wire extend away next to him, crossing the cavernous avenue below, before it attached itself to the twin building opposite. A gust of wind flicked violently through Jake’s hair, and he was pleased to see the taut wire didn’t move.

That was promising.

A dozen mice wandered slowly along the top of that wire now, and Jake blinked, realising he was having another waking dream. This was a new experience, even with his usually rampant insomnia. Normally he’d get enough sleep to indulge his brain’s need for the REM stages, but not this week. Now it was acting them out even when he was conscious.

He couldn’t be sure how much of what he’d experienced today was real or not.

Had he really just had a meeting two storeys below with a famous movie star about financing his next picture?

Maybe.
