Jeremy sat on the edge of his bed. “Do you need me to, like, take my shirt off or something?”

“No.” Thayer gestured to the spot next to him. “May I?”

“Yeah, yes.” He scooted over toward the head of the bed and watched her nervously.

“What I need you to do is listen to me for a minute.” Thayer dug in her bag and pulled out an inhaler. “This is a sample from the hospital. I know you didn’t fill the prescription I gave you.”

“I, uh, I didn’t…” He flushed red. “How could you possibly know that?”

Thayer pulled Collier’s card from her pocket. “You need to call Sergeant Jim Collier as soon as possible.”

“The cops?” He took the card with a shaky hand and paled visibly. “Am I in trouble?”

“No, Jeremy.” Thayer placed a comforting hand on his arm. “You’re not in any trouble. But I do believe you got into trouble after you left the hospital on Christmas Eve and the police need to speak with you.”

“I didn’t.” His voice cracked. “I didn’t do anything wrong, Thayer. It was those…fucking assholes.”

“Jeremy, stop. I can’t know the details. I’m sorry, and I can’t tell you how I know what I do. Jim Collier is a friend of mine and you can trust him.”

“Yeah, okay.” He bobbed his head, his voice wavering.

“You know what? You must know Kelly Warren, right? Nora’s brother?”

His eyes brightened, color flooding his cheeks. “Kelly, yeah.”

“I totally agree. He is very good looking. He works with Sergeant Collier and will probably be there to speak with you as well, okay?”

He stared at the card. “Does Nora know?”

“I didn’t tell her anything.”

“Okay. Do you think it would be all right if I called in the morning?”

Thayer covered his hand with her own. “I think that would be fine. Promise me?”

“I’ll do it. I promise.”
