Chapter Six

“Merry Christmas.”

Nick groaned and cracked open an eye. Sunlight pierced his skull, making his head throb. His mouth was dry and tasted stale. His stomach rolled with nausea. He closed his eyes, willing consciousness to slide away again.

“Wake up, sleepyhead. Your dad will be wondering where you are.”

The bed shifted as someone sat and the enticing smell of coffee filled his nostrils. He sat up, rubbing his eyes until they worked.

Seph was perched next to him, smiling. He was in a T-shirt and boxers. His dark hair was mussed with sleep, falling in his face in a way that made him look boyish and elf-like. His smile was wide and glowed brighter than the winter sun shining in the window.

“Seph?” Nick croaked, blinking, trying to make his thoughts fall in line.

Seph took in the look on Nick’s face, and his smile faded. “Yeah. It’s me. How are you feeling?”

Nick clutched his head and shut his eyes as the night before came flooding back—Seph’s mouth, Seph’s body against his own, their panted words, the overwhelming power of just how good it had been.

He sipped the coffee, praying it would anchor his whirling emotions.

“Everything all right?”

“Yeah,” Nick said hurriedly, nodding, “everything’s fine.”

Seph examined him a moment longer, then looked away. “Look, Nick. If you’re regretting last night—”

“I’m not,” he said vehemently, perhaps a little too much so. “Of course I’m not.”

Seph raised his eyebrows. “I was just going to say…it’s all right if you are. I know you were hurting last night and on the wrong end of a few bottles of fizz. Perhaps I shouldn’t have let it happen. Either way, I get it if you just needed a bit of comfort.”

Nick stared at him, nonplussed by how much the words hurt. “That’s all it was?”

“Wasn’t it?”

Nick tried desperately to read Seph’s eyes and couldn’t. He looked away.

Seph surprised him with a soft chuckle. He leaned in and kissed him on the forehead. “Drink your coffee then meet me downstairs. I’ve got a surprise for you.”

By the time Nick had finished the really very good coffee, showered and dressed—even though putting on his suit from the night before made him feel dirty all over again. The worst of the hangover had drained away, and he was left with an uncertain prickle at the base of his spine. He descended the stairs to be folded into the smell of bacon and toast wafting from the kitchen.

“Hey there,” Seph said as he shoveled bacon onto a plate with hot buttered toast and fried mushrooms. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas,” Nick said with a little uncertainly as he took in the table set for two, an array of sauce bottles and a steaming coffeepot set on a snowman placemat between the plates. It was all so…domestic. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had cooked a meal for him who hadn’t been paid to do it.

“Sit,” Seph said, taking his own seat. He must have showered in the main bathroom. His hair was still damp, curling as it dried.
