Chapter Sixteen

Sunday found Raine antsy, unable to concentrate on anything. Even during church services she’d squirmed like an impatient three-year-old earning a ‘sit-there-and-be-still’ glare from Cora. Afterward, to kill more time they went shopping, ate lunch and dinner out, and took in a movie. Finally, it was Monday morning and Raine lay wide awake even before the neighbor’s rooster started crowing. It was D-day. Divorce Day. Hallelujah! Impending freedom never felt so good. Raine wondered if she should be sad her marriage was over. Nope! How could she be sorry ending something that had become a hellish nightmare? She thought of Jess. As a precautionary measure, she wanted the green light before going to him. A glance at the bedside clock said she’d better wait to call Gordon. Even if they were her best friends, they wouldn’t appreciate being woken up this early, especially with the baby.

In the stillness, she reflected on the past five years. She couldn’t regret the early years of her marriage. They’d been good and those were the memories she’d share with Katy. Turning on her side, she tucked a hand beneath her cheek, watching the soft rise and fall of her chest. “Oh sweetie,” she whispered, “life’s only going to get better for us.” Katy deserved an emotionally stable life and it was her responsibility to provide it. Starting today!

Too impatient to lay there another moment she padded to the shower. Afterward, surveying her face in the mirror, she noted the deepest of the bruises were mere shadows of color now. However, her ribs were still tender, especially if she moved wrong. As for her kidneys, no longer feeling any discomfort, she assumed they were okay. Overall, she considered herself lucky. Things could have turned out a lot worse.

Katy woke while she was combing her damp hair. “I’m hungry, Mommy.”

“How about pancakes and bacon,” she scooped her from the covers, ignoring the twinges in her ribs and headed for the kitchen.

Cora came out just as she was lining crisp bacon strips atop a paper towel covered plate. “Mm . . . Mm. I love the smell of bacon frying.”

“Mommy’s making pancakes and she’s making me itty-bitty ones. You and Mommy get big ones cause you’re grown-ups. When I grow up I can have big ones, too.” Katy leaned against Cora’s legs.

Picking her up, she kissed a rosy cheek, loving Katy as if she were her own grandbaby. “Let’s set the table while Mommy finishes up with the pancakes.”

After breakfast, she took Katy outside while Raine checked for messages. Wanting more ammunition, Raine wanted Addison to contact her again. Unfortunately, he hadn’t. Still too early to call Gordon, she headed outside to join the fun. Under an overcast sky boasting heavy banks of dark clouds, they took turns pushing Katy on the swing-set and playing in the snow with her. Her peals of laughter drifted up to where Jess was fixing a board on the porch at the next cabin. Katy’s laughter made him smile. The kid was a cutie-pie and the spitting image of that gorgeous momma of hers.
