Chapter 12

How are you Makenzie?” Dr. Reid asked after taking a sip from her bottled water.

“Fine.”

“We didn’t get to meet last week because of the holiday. Speaking of, how was your Thanksgiving?”

“It was cool,” Makenzie said diverting her eyes to the floor.

“Did you spend it with your mom?”

“No, she had to work. I went over my grandmother’s house.”

“Did you enjoy yourself?”

“It had been a while since I last saw her and some of the other family so it was cool,” Makenzie looked back up with a smile in her eyes.

“Is there a reason you don’t get to see your grandmother much?”

“My dad’s been living with her ever since he left me and my mom. I don’t want to deal with him so I just don’t go by there.”

“How long ago did he leave?”

Makenzie’s whole demeanor suddenly changed. She slouched back on the couch, and rolled her eyes. She didn’t want to get into a deep discussion about her family. Most days she wished she could upgrade them for better parents. She hated them both but especially her father.

“Makenzie?” Can you tell me about your dad?” Dr. Reid softly asked while tilting her head to the side interrupting Makenzie’s thoughts.

“He left over three years ago. I was like twelve or thirteen I think. He became a drunk and I don’t want to have anything to do with him. When he comes around he stinks and he’s always apologizing. It gets on my nerves,” Makenzie rolled her eyes again.

“That’s a long time. Did it hurt you when he left?” Dr. Reid spoke softly.

“Yeah, but I got over it.”

“Was he at home during Thanksgiving?”

“No, thank goodness. He had to work.”

“Why are you mad at your father? Is it because he left you and your mom?”

“That’s part of it.”

“Were you two very close?”

Makenzie’s eyes instantly became glassy. She had never talked to anyone about her relationship with her father. But, her sessions with Dr. Reid hadn’t been so bad lately. She was cool and down to earth not like that counselor her mother had her seeing when she was younger. She seemed to really care about what Makenzie had to say. She no longer felt like Dr. Reid was just trying to get all up in her business. But, the topic was still pretty touchy.

She nervously picked at her nails and nodded her head up and down. She quickly caught a tear before it raced down her face.

“Tell me about the dad you were close to.”

Makenzie closed her eyes and spoke. “We were super close. If he was in the garage fixing on his car, I was right there handing him the tools. I even watched sports with him all the time. My mom said I used to wait outside the bathroom until he came out when I was only two,” Makenzie chuckled at the memory.

Dr. Reid remained silent only smiling and nodding her head to show she was giving her full attention.

“He taught me how to read before I went to school. He taught me how to cook, ride a bike, swim, play the piano, everything.
