18 Piper

I left Asher’s house, unable to wipe the goofy smile from my face. Before, he’d seemed distant and cold. But now I knew better. His blowing hot and cold, the distance he put between himself and other people, his drive to achieve, and even how he treated his own body. Ash held himself together by controlling his surroundings.

He didn’t have to, but he’d let me in.

Humming to myself, I’d unlocked my car door, ready to head home, when I spotted Olivia approaching.

“How did your meeting go?” she asked.

I blinked, trying to shake myself free from my thoughts. “Fine. We didn’t do much planning though.”

She eyed my outfit. “I’ll bet. You look awfully pretty today.”

I chuckled. “That’s what he said.”

Her eyes widened. “I knew it! Tell me everything. I need to know all the details.”

Thinking back to when he’d held me, I couldn’t help but grin in response.

“Nothing happened.” I raised both hands as Olivia shot me a disbelieving look. “Seriously! We just talked and got to know each other a little better. Ash also offered to teach me how to swim when I told him how I was afraid of the ocean.”

“Private swimming lessons?” Olivia closed her eyes and fanned herself. “I can already see the two of you in the pool, looking all cute together. Ooh, I’m getting more inspiration for song lyrics.”

I had to laugh. “Hate to burst your bubble there, but it’s not going to happen. He wanted to teach me tomorrow, but I’m watching Bas. I can’t bring my little brother; it’s not safe for him to be near water unsupervised.”

Olivia’s reply was immediate. “I’ll watch him.”

My eyebrows raised. “You would?”

“Why not?” Olivia shrugged, like it was no big deal. Which to her, well, maybe it wasn’t. But to someone who had to take care of her brother mostly on her own for the last couple of years, it was huge. “You’ll get your private lesson, and I’ll hang out with Bas. Don’t worry; kids love me.”

I was touched, but I restrained myself from agreeing. I needed Olivia to know what she was getting herself into. “Yeah, but Bas is different from other kids. It takes some time before he warms up to people.”

“Sure, I get that. But I can still try. And if I need any help, you’ll be right there. So it shouldn’t be too bad. Plus, you said he likes music. Well, I like music too. Maybe we could connect over that.” Olivia grinned. “Come on, Pipes. Let me watch Bas. Live a little.”

My heart skipped a beat. Perhaps she was right? What did I have to lose? “Okay, I’ll text Asher now.”

Me: You still open to teaching me how to swim tomorrow?
