At this point, we are past our budget of 500 words for this. Not a problem. Your outline and word count budgets were guides, nothing more. You could end the scene right here, or you could keep going with it if you’re feeling good about it. If you choose to keep going and describe the standing-up sex act in detail, your planned 500 words for this scene could easily more than double. Still not a problem. You still have a long extended sex scene planned for the climax. Maybe you want to save something for then. Maybe not. Also, this is just a first draft. It still needs polishing and editing. You should expect your second draft to be smaller than the first after you remove anything that was boring, failed to advance the story, or was just plain wrong.

This sex scene works only if you’ve invested a few paragraphs in the previous scene to establish a strong sexual tension between John and Penny. Note also how the sex scene only gets increasingly explicit the further you read.
