If I were crazy about Christmas, the fact that it was snowing wouldâve jingled my bells but I was from sea-level California where snow never happened and if you wanted to find the white stuff, you had to drive a significant distance to fulfill your need to sled or ski down a mountain.
I wasnât that girl and never had been.
Thankfully, my dad hadnât been a fan either â which given the discovery that heâd grown up in Colorado, buried in the stuff, made total sense.
Georgia looked pretty adorable in her new winter wardrobe, a fact she enjoyed exploiting at every turn. I was doing my best to be the supportive bestie, even though I was getting more and more worried at her ever-shrinking body.
âNo longer in double digits, âyâall,â Georgia said, spinning in a slow circle before me as I put my books in my locker before lunch. âI never thought Iâd see the day that my fat ass wouldnât be stuffed into the fat girl sizes.â
I inwardly winced at her terminology but who was I to police her choice of vernacular? I simply smiled and said, âYou look great,â even though what I wanted to say was, Iâm worried that youâre purposefully starving yourself. Please see a doctor.
âRight? Who knew I was cute?â Georgia quipped.
âI knew,â I corrected her with a subtle frown. âAnd, for the record, I thought you were pretty great the way you were.â
Georgia waved away my comment, saying, âIâd love to spend lunch with you but I have plans with Randa and Erin if thatâs okay.â
I should be happy that Georgia was branching out and finding new friends, especially since I spent way too much time with the boys, but I wasnât happy because I knew Randa and Erin werenât true friends. They were snobby, elite jerk faces who only deigned to spend time with Georgia now that she wasnât a âdisgusting pigâ as Iâd heard them call her.
Oh, sure now, they were fawning all over Georgia, eager to spend time with Lana Millerâs daughter as they cruised around in Georgiaâs new BMW and spent gobs of money at the mall buying shit no one needs.
But I couldnât say any of that â not if I was going to keep our friendship intact.
I forced a smile. âYeah, have fun. I have some studying to do.â
Georgia cocked her head with a patronizing smile, saying, âAww honey, the same olâ little book nerd. Nice to see some things never change. Okay, have fun!â And then she bounced away, connecting with Randa and Erin at the end of the hall. I could hear Georgiaâs laughter as they, no doubt, gossiped about less-fortunate people because thatâs what Randa and Erin did and now Georgia was a disciple.
How did that happen?
Georgia had been the best thing about this fucking awful place but then somehow her mother had gotten into her head and now she was becoming just like the rest â borderline inhuman.
I glared at the snow drifting lazily from the gloomy skies and decided to take my lunch in the library for some much-needed quiet time.
