CHAPTER SEVEN
THE party started to break up around one oâclock. Logan waited until they were in the car and heading back to Whitegates before saying tautly, âYou stay away from Tod Garfield. Is that clear?â
The terse command, delivered without any kind of prologue, made Carynâs hackles rise. She wasnât a child to be spoken to that way; she wasnât going to be spoken to that way!
âThat might be difficult,â she returned shortly. âDuncan asked me to join the drama society. I believe Tod is a member.â
âYou know damn well what I mean.â His tone was still chpped, his profile hard. âHis wife has enough of a problem trying to keep their marriage together, without you offering him encouragement.â
âI didnât offer him anything!â she denied.
âYou let him take you outside.â
âFor a breath of fresh air. It was getting stuffy in there.â
âYouâre not that naive.â
âApparently I am. Otherwise Iâd have had more sense than to marry you in the first place!â
âYou married me because you wanted to,â came the terse response. âBecause I could give you what you needed.â
Caryn drew in a shallow breath. âI donât want your money!â
âIâm not talking about money. You have a highly developed libido. Marrying me was a way of gratifying it without kicking over the traces.â
âYou mean I just wanted sex?â She was too hurt to be angry. âIf that was true, why would I have turned away from it on our wedding-night? Why would what Margot told me have bothered me at all?â
The laugh was brittle. âYouâd had your fantasies shattered. It was all right for me to be madly in love with you, even if you didnât have quite the same feelings for me. The off-on-off-again act was by way of retaliation. If Iâd forced the issue, youâd have been delighted.â
âThatâs not true!â
âI think it is. Leaving you to stew for a few days was the worst kind of punishment. Last night you were desperate enough to rile me into taking you. Not,â Logan added with irony, âthat I was so loath. My own libido has been decidedly undernourished these last few days.â He paused, tone firming afresh. âAnyway, Iâd better be the only man you have physical contact with from now on. If I catch you so much as looking sideways at anyone else, youâll regret it. Understood?â
âOh, perfectly.â The anger was coming through now, loud and clear. âItâs called dog-in-the-manger!â
âNot true. I want you all right. Iâm just not prepared to turn a blind eye while you play the coquette with other men.â
âBut Iâm not supposed to complain when you do that kind of thing with other women, is that it?â she demanded. âIâd have to be an idiot not to know what was going on between you and Margot tonight! Everyone knew!â
âThen everyone was wrong,â he came back flatly. âAnd donât try to turn the tables on me that way. Contrary to general belief, attack isnât always the best means of defence.â
Caryn subsided into silence. He was never going to believe that she hadnât intentionally flirted with Tod.
