CHAPTER SEVEN

THE party started to break up around one o’clock. Logan waited until they were in the car and heading back to Whitegates before saying tautly, ‘You stay away from Tod Garfield. Is that clear?’

The terse command, delivered without any kind of prologue, made Caryn’s hackles rise. She wasn’t a child to be spoken to that way; she wasn’t going to be spoken to that way!

‘That might be difficult,’ she returned shortly. ‘Duncan asked me to join the drama society. I believe Tod is a member.’

‘You know damn well what I mean.’ His tone was still chpped, his profile hard. ‘His wife has enough of a problem trying to keep their marriage together, without you offering him encouragement.’

‘I didn’t offer him anything!’ she denied.

‘You let him take you outside.’

‘For a breath of fresh air. It was getting stuffy in there.’

‘You’re not that naive.’

‘Apparently I am. Otherwise I’d have had more sense than to marry you in the first place!’

‘You married me because you wanted to,’ came the terse response. ‘Because I could give you what you needed.’

Caryn drew in a shallow breath. ‘I don’t want your money!’

‘I’m not talking about money. You have a highly developed libido. Marrying me was a way of gratifying it without kicking over the traces.’

‘You mean I just wanted sex?’ She was too hurt to be angry. ‘If that was true, why would I have turned away from it on our wedding-night? Why would what Margot told me have bothered me at all?’

The laugh was brittle. ‘You’d had your fantasies shattered. It was all right for me to be madly in love with you, even if you didn’t have quite the same feelings for me. The off-on-off-again act was by way of retaliation. If I’d forced the issue, you’d have been delighted.’

‘That’s not true!’

‘I think it is. Leaving you to stew for a few days was the worst kind of punishment. Last night you were desperate enough to rile me into taking you. Not,’ Logan added with irony, ‘that I was so loath. My own libido has been decidedly undernourished these last few days.’ He paused, tone firming afresh. ‘Anyway, I’d better be the only man you have physical contact with from now on. If I catch you so much as looking sideways at anyone else, you’ll regret it. Understood?’

‘Oh, perfectly.’ The anger was coming through now, loud and clear. ‘It’s called dog-in-the-manger!’

‘Not true. I want you all right. I’m just not prepared to turn a blind eye while you play the coquette with other men.’

‘But I’m not supposed to complain when you do that kind of thing with other women, is that it?’ she demanded. ‘I’d have to be an idiot not to know what was going on between you and Margot tonight! Everyone knew!’

‘Then everyone was wrong,’ he came back flatly. ‘And don’t try to turn the tables on me that way. Contrary to general belief, attack isn’t always the best means of defence.’

Caryn subsided into silence. He was never going to believe that she hadn’t intentionally flirted with Tod.
