Chapter Twelve

Callie took her lunch to a nearby park on Friday to enjoy some fresh air. The flowerbeds lining the footpaths were bursting with rainbow-colored tulips and sunny-faced daisies. Young mothers with toddlers took advantage of the sunshine, turning the playground into a beehive of activity.

She took a seat on a vacant park bench and watched in amusement as the sight of live rabbits in a small fenced pen attracted some of the children. The kids waited in an excited, noisy line for their turn to enter the enclosure. The bunnies, obviously not so thrilled to be a part of the day's entertainment, huddled together in a trembling mass of multicolored fur. Poor little things. An enterprising young photographer took pictures of the preschoolers as they each got their chance to play with the timid animals. Callie's love for children knew no bounds, but any sympathy she had today rested solely with the nervous animals as they waited for their turn to be manhandled.

Callie glanced at her watch. Samantha should be home from school by now. She punched in Sam's number on her cell phone and waited for the call to connect.

"Hello."

"Samantha, its Callie. How was your morning?"

"Busy, just walked through the door."

"Is it a bad time?"

"No. What's up?"

Callie bit her lip. "Do you girls have any plans for the weekend?"

"I don't, and Iris hasn't said anything to me about doing anything."

"Great, I have some invitations for you if you're interested."

Sam's reply was hesitant. "OK."

"I had some errands to run after work last night. I found the most adorable little dress while I was at the mall. I couldn't help myself. I bought it for Bobbie."

"You shouldn't have done that," Sam admonished Callie mildly. "You guys have done way too much already."

"Too late." Callie laughed. "I can't wait for you to see it. Anyway, I thought we could dress her up and go have her picture made with the Easter Bunny tomorrow."

"I'm not sure..."

"Please," Callie wheedled. "They do wonderful pictures. I know it's something you'll treasure when she's older." Callie waited in silence for a few seconds.

"Do you offer classes?" Samantha finally asked.

"What?"

"You know. Getting Your Way 101?"

Callie snickered. "I don't need classes, sweetheart. I have a natural gift. Do we have a date?"

"Sure, why not? What time?"

"Why don't I pick you girls up at eleven? We can grab some fast food and then go to the mall for pictures. Just be prepared to be patient. The line is always a long one."

"OK, we'll be ready. What else?"

"Well, since Sunday is Easter and Bobbie has this beautiful new outfit, I wanted to invite you to attend church with us on Sunday morning. We always have such a lovely Easter service. I know having you there would be a treat for Iris."

Sam sighed on the other end of the connection. "Let's take it a day at a time. I'll give you a yes for Saturday and a maybe for Sunday."

"That works." Callie hesitated, reluctant to make Sam feel pressured, but tonight would be fun for everyone.
