CHAPTER 15

AFTER DROPPING OFF Michael at the Hyatt, Jack parked his Volvo in a public lot nearby and walked several blocks to the Blue Line station. After a brief wait, he rode the train into the city, to Jackson Boulevard, where he exited the train and then struggled like a fish swimming against the current as he made his way through the congested subway tunnel, finally coming up to street level, and then crossing the street to the Dirksen Federal Building.

The three hundred and eighty-four-foot building, thirty floors of shaded glass, housed the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States Bankruptcy Court, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and lastly the United States Marshals for the Northern District of Illinois.

Like most buildings downtown, the building was crowded with the morning rush of men and women trying to get to work or appointments on-time.

Three years passed since Jack last set foot in the Federal Plaza; on his last day he'd stormed out, angry over his forced retirement from the Marshal's Service. He worried that his memories of this place—good or bad—might trigger his emotions and cause him to experience the manic highs and lows that forced him out of the job in the first place. However, after seeing the doctors and taking the Lamictal, he was confident he would not experience an episode in front of his old friends and teammates.

All visitors entering the Federal Building were required to pass through lobby security, which included metal detectors and a cadre of stone-faced security guards with wands. Like most law enforcement officers, they always looked angry, but if approached respectfully, you'd find them to be pleasant and helpful.

After making his way through security—surprisingly, he did not recognize any of the security team that worked the lobby before he’d left the service—he followed the flow of bodies to the elevator bank. He waited for several minutes until he could cram into one of the cars, and finally rode up to the eighth floor, where his former squad was located.

He exited the elevator and walked down a short corridor on the left that led to a set of glass doors with Mahogany handles. Across the glass, etched in white lettering, read U.S. Marshals Fugitive Squad. Below the title, the insignia, the Sears Tower (Jack refused to call it Willis) and the Department of Justice logo over the American Flag. In the circle around the Sears Tower and Eagle read Great Lake Task Force, and below that, US Marshals, Chicago.

Taking a deep breath, Jack pulled open the doors and stepped inside what had once been his domain. As Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, Jack headed the Fugitive Squad, which was part of the larger Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force with offices in Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. He had handpicked each of the men and women on his team, creating what was arguably the most successful Fugitive Squad in the country.
