Chapter 21

Nate rapped the table with his knuckles and frowned. With all the knuckle-rapping required for this meeting, his hand was getting sore. When the shouts and confusion didn’t stop, he picked up his heavy stainless-steel coffee mug and slammed it down. At the crash of metal on wood, a startled silence filled the room. He leaned forward and sent his angry gaze around at the people sitting at the table.

“This is not up for debate. Terrell is your Alpha. Dusty and Nettie are his Regents. You will give them your oath of support, or you will leave the ranch.”

“Sire?”

Nate’s gaze jerked to Joshua. “What, Joshua?”

“Sire, Dylan Pace was a tyrant. Most here are relieved he is gone and will be happy to give an oath of fealty to Terrell. However, there are others who want the alpha position for themselves.” He cut his eyes toward Westin Blake, then to Julius Pace.

The king’s eyes followed Joshua’s gaze to Westin, then Julius. Hard, angry eyes glared back at him from where Westin leaned against the wall. Beyond him, Julius glowered at the entire room. Nate sighed and waved a hand toward Westin. “So, let’s hear what you have to say, Blake.”

Westin Blake straightened to his full height. “My father was alpha before Dylan Pace. He was poisoned before Pace challenged him, or he would have won that challenge. Pace killed him. I have more right to the alpha position than this,” he gestured toward Terrell, “the son of a murderer has. If you are the king, make this right.”

Nate’s eyes narrowed. Koreth, what kind of alpha would Blake be? Koreth’s attention homed in on the wolf, pushing into his mind. He would be a good alpha. Somewhere else. This pack needs Terrell.

Sighing, Nate leaned back in his chair, both hands flat on the table. “If you were alpha, what following would you have, Westin?”

“My two sons and our families.” He searched the crowd, then shrugged. “Seven of the wolves here.”

Nate studied the man’s face for a moment, then turned back to Joshua. “If Westin was alpha to the pack after his father died, what kind of alpha do you think he would have been?”

Joshua glanced at Westin. Westin glared back at him. With a sigh, Joshua bowed his head and thought before answering. “Sire, Westin Blake is a good man in a bad situation. His position as the second beta allowed him to protect the pack from the worst of Dylan Pace’s depravity. Had he become alpha rather than Pace, I fully believe the pack would have been healthy and whole. There are a few in the pack who embraced Dylan’s evil, but most simply suffered beneath him.”

The surprise on Westin’s face was almost funny. Careful to keep humor off his face, Nate studied Westin. “I’ve given the Alpha position of this pack to Terrell. I won’t change that.” When Westin opened his mouth, Nate held his right palm in the air. “Wait. I won’t change that, but I do have a pack that needs an alpha.
