Chapter 19

After approving the construction, and the purchase of executive chairs for the reps, dinette sets for the break room, and the air conditioning and heating system for the building, Nate returned his hard hat and left the construction site. Taking a deep breath of warm Texas air, he closed his eyes to savor it. He always missed Texas winters when he was in the military. While most people further north were wearing heavy coats and wading through inches, or even feet, of snow, many Texans were walking around in cut-off jeans, short sleeve shirts, and flip-flops. At least in this part of Texas.

Well, some of them. Nate preferred jeans and cowboy boots, even on hot summer days. The short sleeve shirts, though, were fine. It took about thirty minutes to walk to the bear compound. From a distance, he studied the collection of modular homes. He was a little embarrassed that the bears didn’t have traditionally built homes, especially since he was having the bear carpenters build homes for other groups. The bears, however, seemed content with the houses he purchased for them.

The yards were neatly mowed and landscaped. Most of the houses had flower gardens, with a late-blooming mix of wildflowers. The scrub brush, briars, and weeds that formerly covered the ground were gone. In their place, Fescue grass, still green due to the unseasonably warm weather, covered the lawns. All the bears had huge covered porches on their homes. And every porch sported heavy duty rocking chairs and swings. Most driveways held an SUV, and all were washed and polished. From where Nate stood, it looked like a model community.

He had been to the bear compound once before, but not in the daytime when it was easier to see everything. Taking another deep breath, he headed toward Daryll’s house. When he walked up the porch steps, the door opened. Bess stepped out. “Good morning, Nate. Daryll’s not here. He’s at the construction site, today.”

“Morning, Bess. I spoke with Daryll a few minutes ago. He’s gotten a lot done the past week. I’m actually here to see Zoe. Is she home?”

“She’s helping Stella with her algebra homework. Come on in.”

With daylight shining through the sheers, the room was brighter than it was the night they all congregated here to remove the former Huntsmen’s rings. Zoe sat at the kitchen dinette, her head shaking as she pointed to the paper in front of Stella. “You have to remember the order of operations. You’re doing everything else right but coming up with the wrong answer because you’re working the problem left to right without considering which operation comes first.”

Stella sighed. “I don’t remember the order.”

“Exponentiation, multiplication and division, and then addition and subtraction. Unless it’s in parentheses, like in this problem. Anything inside the parentheses is done first, in the order of operations.”

Stella blinked and moaned. “Can’t we take a break. Algebra makes my brain mushy!”

Zoe patted her arm. “You’re doing better, Stella. Really. Go ahead and take a break, and we’ll try again tonight.
