Chapter 18

Nate stood and caught Eli’s shoulder in his right hand, forcing him to stay put. Koreth gave Jabril command to wait. Muscles tight, ready to fight if necessary, Eli stood still. When Nate was sure Eli wouldn’t attack the secretary, he released him and turned to face the secretary and the general. “Renate is old enough to decide for herself which mate she wants, Secretary.”

The secretary raised one corner of his lip. “Just because you did your duty and returned her to me, don’t think you have the right to an opinion in this.” The secretary turned to General Brighton. “I want these men detained until we leave.” He pointed to Marston. “And arrest him as an enemy spy.”

Brighton nodded and turned toward the door.

Nate raised an eyebrow. “I don’t think you want to do that, Secretary.”

Brighton whipped around. “Watch it, Rollins. You’re on pretty shaky ground, yourself.”

“Shaky ground, General? This man helped us. If not for him, Renate would have died before we got to her. He also helped the rest of us escape. He’s under my personal protection. You can’t have him.”

A vein on the general’s temple throbbed with his anger. Ignoring him, Nate looked at the secretary. “As for your daughter, she, too, is under my protection. If she doesn’t want to mate with Jackson’s son, I won’t allow it.” Beside him, Nate felt the tension in Eli relax.

The general took a step toward Nate. “You are under arrest for treason, Rollins.” His voice took on a graveled sound as he said, “My sources say after you killed Jackson, you disappeared. You didn’t mention that before.”

Nate rubbed the back of his neck and sucked on his teeth. “From my point of view, everyone else disappeared.”

Eli snickered, then cleared his throat and rearranged his face into an emotionless mask when Nate frowned at him.

“Where did you go?”

“I don’t know, General. They didn’t tell me.”

“Who are they?”

Nate ignored the general and looked at the Secretary. That is not for humans to hear. When Koreth sent the thought to the secretary’s wolf, the secretary blinked, then his eyes opened wide.

“How did you . . .,” he started to whisper, then turned to the general. “Those two,” he pointed at Don and Marston, “send them to the room next door. Now.”

The general frowned. “Secretary . . ..”

“I want them out, General. Now!”

Face still tight with anger, the general nodded and scratched his ear. He looked at Don. “Take Marston to the room next door and stay there until I come get you.”

“Sir, yes, sir.” Don stood and caught Marston by the shoulder. “Let’s go.”

“But . . ..”

“Let’s go.” Don pulled him to his feet and yanked him to the door. A moment later, the door shut behind them.

The cameras and mics are no longer working, Nate. Nate nodded. Thanks, Koreth. Leaning forward, Nate ignored the general, keeping his gaze locked on the secretary’s eyes. “The one who spoke said she was the First Mother, Mother to the Lycos.” He stopped for a second and raised his right eyebrow.
