It was early evening at Bisbee High. Arthur, Billy, Damonia and Mitch were eating dinner in the school cafeteria. It had. The mountain tops gleamed copper red in the fading sun through tall vertical windows. Billy rolled out a large paper map, he pinned the corners with salt and pepper shakers. He placed a small fishing weight in the center of the map.
âThere is more out here,â he said, âand itâs right here.â
âWhat about what we brought in?â asked Mitch.
âEnough for testing and a small run or two, we want to go industrial scale. We needed a sample from the site to verify the yield. We need denser material than that pile of dirt we got from the Croats. That shit down under the squash court will take two years to cook down into something useful. The samples you found are hot enough right out of the bag.â
Billy caged a Newport from Damonia. He pointed at the map.
âAfter the site cooled down the Army Corps of Engineers got worried. The bomb left a solid saucer shaped wading pool of the stuff around the tower over three inches thick. It stayed warm to the touch on all year round. Snow would melt on it. The shit glowed in the dark for Christâs sake. About a year after the blast they sent some guys out there to break it up and haul it off. You guys got the scraps.â
âAhh, but where did they take it?â asked Damonia.
âNobody knew for sure,â Billy said. âWe got this off a dead Croat a few days ago,â Billy ran his fingers over the map. âI have an idea where he got it. Itâs a map of an army waste disposal ground. See these little boxes? Trailers buried in sand, full of radioactive shit from the tests, must be two hundred of them.â
âThatâs a lot of ground to cover, Billy.â Mitch said. âThis could take weeks.â
âLook closer,â said Billy, âThese pencil marks. Iâll be the Croats knew which ones were hot and marked them.â
âDid you ask the guy?â Mitch said.
âBy the time we beat the map out of him he couldnât talk anymore. We went a bit too far.â
âSo, itâs back to New Mexico?â said Mitch. âWeâre kinda âhotâ there right now.â
âOnly your car is known. Thatâs no problem. We have two big Suburbans down at the Fire Station. They can haul whatever you find. Weâll send some muscle along,â Billy said.
Billy pointed to a dot on the map. âThereâs a geezer who runs a rock shop eight miles outside of Carrizozo. Name is Ray. He lived around there when they buried the shit. He actually sells the stuff in his shop. He told us he found some of those rocks out somewhere around here. We think the Croats got the map from him. Made him mark up the map where the good stuff is.â
âWhoâs the muscle?â Damonia asked.
âTwo goblin wranglers, Jessie and Frank. That gives us four drivers, you wonât be doing any overnight stops.
