Karina looked at her suitcase over the bed. Not really hers. Suitcases, clothes, accessories, they were all strange to her. All she knew were her nightgowns and some dresses. Very little that she could call hers in this strange body and life.
She hadnât seen Firis any more since their last encounter, which was a relief. Perhaps she had over-reacted and maybe even Sat had misread his uncle. If he truly did have some past trauma in that regard, couldnât he also mix things up, the way regular, non-telepathic people did with words and body language? It made sense. Karina avoided thinking about that in front of Satwak, though. Heâd still been distant, and it was a great reminder that he wasnât her friend.
Sat came in. âEverything ready?â
âI guess. Are you going to tell me where we are going or should I figure it out once we get there?â
He took a deep breath. âWeâre opening a portal to an ethereal city; Forestglare. The idea is to lure some guardians there and pressure them to attend our demands.â
âOh, now you can open portals. Werenât we isolated or something?â
âWe figured a way. Itâs new and itâs going to be a game changer for us.â
âCanât you go to my dimension? Or to the city where the Guardians are?â
Sat shook his head. âThese passages are too well guarded. Forestglare is tiny and nobody would think weâd strike there.â
Karina didnât like the idea of striking a possibly defenseless city for no reason.
Sat shrugged. âWe have no choice.â
Well, maybe it would be her opportunity to find a way back home, and an opportunity to stay away from Luminaâand Firis. âAnd how come you need my help?â
âTo open the portal. Weâll be five people doing it. The strength of us all will make it open.â
âBut I donât have magic.â
âIt doesnât matter.â
âFine, I guess.â
They walked to the teleporting tower.
Faizana, a guy, and another girl sat in a circle. There were more warriors around them. At the opposite door, more warriors ready to enter. It wasnât as if Karina had any power to stop them.
Firis was there too, and walked towards them. âMy nephew and his wife, the loveliest of them all.â
Literally everyone in that room was better looking than Karina, but okay. She was happy Firis was being kind to her.
Sat gave her a plaque, with the image of a very tall room, like a hollow tower. âJust look at it and imagine opening a portal there.â
Karina looked at the picture, imagining herself there, as if this tower and that could merge. She felt goosebumps and something else, as if for a moment she could float and see her own body and the circle of people there. Light surrounded her.
The warriors stepped forward and disappeared. Sat put his hand on her head. She shouldnât let him. She imagined pushing him away, and his hand didnât touch her. For a moment she felt she could destroy that place. A second hand touched her head. It was like a metal hand, heavy, and there was no way she could fight it.
