Seven

Sarah woke up early the next morning and was dressed before Kumani brought in her tea. Leaving him in charge of the building work for the day, she set out for Gilgil. She had reconsidered Peter’s proposal in the morning light and realized that she needed to go and tell Ethel MacDougal what had happened. She simply could not try to pretend it had never occurred. Her mind and heart and soul were in turmoil, and she couldn’t even pray sensibly. All she could think of asking God, over and over again, was to take this problem away from her and let her be the way she was before she met Peter. She needed help, and she prayed that the MacDougals had not gone out for the day in their motorbike and sidecar.

But as Sarah pulled up to their house, she saw them sitting together on the veranda having coffee. She breathed a huge sigh of relief as she shut off the motor, and a moment later she was on the veranda, sitting in a chair and sipping a steaming cup of coffee herself.

“Well, Sarah, to what do we owe the pleasure of your visit this morning?” Ralph asked cheerfully.

Sarah hesitated. It would be difficult enough to explain what had happened to Ethel, and she didn’t know if she could tell Ralph as well. But Ralph sensed her hesitation and immediately drained his coffee cup. “I am a married man, and I know when women don’t need me around, so I’ll just excuse myself. I believe I have a sermon to write.”

“Thank you, Dear,” Ethel said quickly, before Sarah could politely protest that she didn’t intend for him to leave. “Now, Sarah, what is the matter? You look completely exhausted. Has something happened?”

“Oh, Ethel, I’m so upset. Peter Stewart came to see me yesterday.” Sarah poured out the whole story. Ethel sat and listened while Sarah explained the proposal, the kiss, her reaction, everything.

When Sarah had finished, Ethel reached out and took her hand. “Oh, Sarah, I’m so sorry that this has happened. I feel so awful for teasing you about Mr. Stewart. But you did the right thing. You obviously cannot marry a man who isn’t a Christian and who sees Christianity as a bargaining chip. I know you’ll get over this experience and one day God will bring a fine Christian man into your life, just as he did for me. In fact, if you don’t mind, I’d like to pray for just such a man for you.”

“Thank you, Ethel,” Sarah mumbled. “But just now I don’t feel that I want to ever have anything to do with men again. And I have to go to Nairobi next week to pick up the supplies I ordered for the clinic. What if I run into Peter Stewart? I don’t think I can face him. I don’t think I can even be in the same town as he is, in case I run into him. I know I am overreacting, but I just don’t know what I would say if I met him in the street.
