SIXTEEN

Celia

FEBRUARY 22

It was a Monday afternoon in February when Celia’s world came crashing down.

It started like any other day. She was in her dorm room, the notes from last weekend’s basketball game pulled up on her laptop as she worked on integrating them into her profile of the team’s star small forward. She had Facebook open too, waiting for Christian to pop on and be ready to chat. He usually had a gap for a while on Monday afternoons, and she was eager to talk to him. Her dad had just emailed the baby shower invitation, and she wanted to talk through her options with Christian before Bethany had a chance to give her the full-court press on why she should go.

So when her computer chimed to let her know she had a new message, a smile automatically bloomed on her face, since she knew exactly who that message must have come from.

Except it wasn’t him.

Hunter: I know what you did.

The room filled with a rattling sound of metal on metal, and it took a moment for Celia to realize it was her bracelet, clacking against her laptop as her hands started to shake. There was only one thing those words could mean, but she couldn’t believe it. She refused to believe it. All she could do was stare at the screen in shock, wondering what nightmare she’d just entered.

How the fuck had he found out?

Hunter: You selfish piece of shit.

Hunter: I can’t believe you thought you could get away with this.

Hunter: My best friend? My only friend????

Hunter: You could fuck any guy on the planet and you had to go after him?

It was probably useless, but Celia’s first response, as always, was to get defensive.

Celia: Who the fuck do you think you are?

Celia: You do not get to talk to me that way.

Hunter: Well, you don’t get to fuck around with my best friend behind my back, but I guess we’re all doing things we aren’t supposed to.

Celia: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Of course she knew. And of course she knew she wasn’t getting away with it. Not now. But she couldn’t help but try to deny it. Maybe he only suspected, maybe if she denied it forcefully enough he’d decide he had been wrong and let it go. It was the only way she had left to convince him that nothing was wrong and he didn’t have to be hurt.

Hunter: Don’t fucking lie to me.

Hunter: I’m so fucking sick of you lying to me.

Celia: I haven’t done anything to you.

And that, she rationalized, was completely true. She’d done things that might hurt him—that obviously had hurt him—but hurting him had never been her intent. It was between her and Christian. It had nothing to do with him, even if he thought it did.

Hunter: Bullshit.

Hunter: What part of I KNOW are you not understanding?

Celia: I don’t care what you know or think you know, I am not going to be insulted like this.

Her heart raced as she quickly closed her browser, cutting off whatever Hunter had been about to say next.
