Chapter Twelve
They returned to the house and proceeded into the kitchen. Rita was in the middle of a conversation with William when they came in.
“All done?” William asked.
“Yeah, though we had a question.”
“Do you know if this is yours, Rita?”
Jane held out the earring in a piece of tissue paper that she’d used to pick it up.
Rita squinted at it and leaned forward before shaking her head. “No. I usually wear studs, and I have only one pair of hoops.”
“Let me see,” William said. “Do you think it belongs to the killer?”
“Who knows right now. Anyway, you are all good to lock up. Thanks again for your time.”
As they came out of the house and watched William locking up the garage something caught Jane’s eye. It was just out of the corner. A flash then movement. She looked off into the tree line and saw someone.
“Max.”
She tried to gesture to him but he was busy on the radio talking to Anthony. Trying her best not to look as if she had noticed anyone, she began pointing towards a section of the house while at the same time getting closer to the tree line. Then as quick as a flash she turned and started running towards the stranger. However, they were a lot faster than her. They bolted into the dark forest and she gave pursuit. Behind her she could hear Max yelling. She hollered back that someone was watching.
Beneath the thick canopy of trees, she could see the figure dashing in and out of the trees trying to escape. They were wearing a thick raincoat, the kind that fishermen wore. It was black though, instead of yellow.
“Stop!” she yelled but they kept running. Whoever it was didn’t know the forest too well as they didn’t appear to be heading in any particular direction. In fact, they began doubling back, going in a complete circle.
Max went one way while she tried to keep on the stranger’s tail. It didn’t take long to catch up with them. One moment she could see them running, the next the stranger was on the floor trying to get Max off them.
“Get off,” the male voice said as Jane caught up with them.
When Max pulled back the hood they saw it was Darryl Roland
“What are you doing in these woods?” Max demanded to know.
“I was talking a walk.”
“It didn’t look like that to me,” Jane said. “You appeared to be watching what was going on.”
“Is there a crime against that? I was curious as to why you were there again.”
“You don’t know?”
“Know what?”
“Steve is dead.”
“What?” he stammered as if having no idea.
“Do you not read the paper?”
“No. It’s full of bad news and gossip. I don’t concern myself with such trivial matters. I prefer to get out in nature.”
Max pulled him up and did a routine search. He pulled out the camera from his pocket.
“Well, you won’t mind if we check the camera then.”
“I have rights. You can’t do that.”
“He’s right.”
Darryl Roland snatched it back and pocketed it.
