When they arrived the Cranshaws’ vehicles were gone. A closed sign was up on the store and for the most part it was quiet along the street. Jane pulled up across the road. All the feelings she had when she was there the last time came flooding back in. The creep factor shot up as she pushed out of her car and dashed across the street with Ethan. All three of them went down the side of the store and approached the back door.
“They have security cameras.”
“Already dealt with,” Ethan said.
She kind of figured that her mother would have already got him doing her dirty work. Lilly went up to the back door, placed her hand on the lock and cast a spell. They heard the sound of it unlocking. Lilly cast a glance over her shoulder and grinned. She was loving this. Jane wasn’t sure what she was more annoyed about. The fact that her mother was using Ethan or that Ethan had approached her mother.
As they stepped inside, it was dark. While her mother felt around for a light switch, Ethan began asking Jane questions about Max.
“So how did he take it? I mean, you telling him you were a witch.”
“Not exactly well.”
“They never do. That’s why it’s probably best a witch marries a warlock.”
“Well, it doesn’t matter, he came around in the end.”
“Did he?”
Jane peered into the darkness. It smelled musty inside. There were few things that scared her. Mannequins in the dark was one of them. She glanced at Ethan who had a mischievous grin on his face.
“Yes. He is on board with it all.”
“Ah, that’s what they all say.”
“What?”
“Oh yeah, you didn’t know? The witches council has seen many a witch and Raglon marry only to separate within the first year. Quite often they have to get involved and deal with the Raglon.”
“Deal?”
“You know. Make them forget they were married or that they had been told their spouse was a witch. A witch and a Raglon’s divorce is very messy.”
If she wasn’t bothered before, she was now. In the months leading up to telling Max, that was all she could think about. The consequences of what might happen if their marriage fell apart. She had to be realistic. Not all marriages survived. People grew apart. They got annoyed with each other’s bad habits, and in some cases they fell in love with other people. The very notion of marriage was hard to wrap her head around, maybe that’s why she had been so reluctant to get engaged to Max. It was the fear of the future. The what-ifs. Of course no one wanted to think that it would happen to them until it did. The truth was, there were some things that couldn’t be controlled by a spell. Love was one. Sure, Agatha had whipped up a few love potions in her time for her customers online but the reality was, they only worked if there was already a strong connection there. It was more of a potion that nurtured love.
