I broke into a fast walk, switching on the boots again. If anything, our conversation with Blythe had left us with even more questions than before. Such as which coven might have had reason to bring down our boss’s business and unseat Madame Grey in one fell swoop.
Was my neighbour really involved? If it was the old Blythe making the accusation, I’d say no without hesitation, but this new Blythe was an unpredictable stranger. Honestly, anyone who wanted to vote out Madame Grey might be responsible. Anyone unscrupulous enough to ruin a bunch of innocent people’s lives in the process, anyway. What didn’t make sense was that they’d gone to my workplace and hit Callie and Veronica with the same curse. They didn’t need to bring down Dritch & Co to take over the town’s council or the covens, if that was their goal.
I was way out of my depth. The only weird thing that’d taken place at work lately was the sudden request from an unknown person to interview hunters for security, and for all I knew, it was standard procedure and Veronica would have been able to offer an explanation. Whoever had put the hunters on our call list, they’d need Madame Grey’s approval to bring in outside security no matter what.
“Blair?”
Lost in thought, I’d walked right past Nathan without noticing.
“Oh,” I said. “Hi.”
Great job sounding enthusiastic there, Blair.
“I thought you were going home,” he said.
“I was, but—the curse hit Alissa.”
I quickly told him about the afternoon’s events, including our talk with Blythe. Nathan might not be able to undo spells, but he had an impartial perspective that nobody else did, especially when it came to the covens. Admittedly, his only view of Blythe had come through me, and she’d tried to drive a wedge between the two of us when I’d first started at Dritch & Co, but it wouldn’t hurt to have someone else aware that there might be a conspiracy to bring the covens down.
“So the curse seems to be moving of its own accord, or the caster is evading attention,” he mused.
“Or it’s Blythe. Obviously, it’s not like I can find Callie to ask who else came into work on Saturday, assuming that’s when it happened. As for Madame Grey, people walk in and out of the witches’ place all the time. And Alissa… it depends on whether she was at home or in the hospital when the curse hit her. But Blythe seems determined to blame it on our new neighbour, Nina. Her natural talent blocks other magic.”
“And has your neighbour shown signs of hostility towards Alissa as well?”
“Well, no,” I admitted. “She said she didn’t do it and my lie-sensing power didn’t go off. But I’m starting to think my lie-sensing ability is a fairy power, not a witch one.”
He nodded. “You know your own magic best, Blair.”
Not the response I’d expected. I’d casually acknowledged my fairy weirdness, and he hadn’t so much as blinked.
“Also, Callie shifted,” I added, before the silence got too awkward.
