The next day, Stella went round to Lisa and John’s for dinner. She hadn’t had a chance to speak to Will about the scan photo and in a way, she’d been glad because she’d been worried about how to explain it. She didn’t want to let Lisa down by telling anyone until she was ready but she also didn’t want to lie to Will. Her main concern now though was that he might think she was pregnant and that she didn’t want to tell him. Keeping secrets was hard, whether it was about your sister’s pregnancy or a fake relationship. If it was a fake relationship that was, because now that they’d kissed — and what an amazing kiss it had been — were they still faking it? Or was there something real between them?

Stella had liked Will’s parents. They’d been kind and friendly and seemed keen to get to know her. Although, of course, they were under the misapprehension that she was carrying their son’s baby, which certainly did crank things up a notch.

She knocked on the door then rubbed her cheeks hard, trying to push her worries aside. Lisa had invited her to round for dinner this evening, stating that it was very important that she didn’t let their mum know. Another secret! It was starting to get exhausting. But she suspected that Lisa wanted to have dinner in her own home with her husband and her sister present so she could relax and not worry about slipping up about her pregnancy to anyone.

The last thing Stella wanted was for Lisa to get anxious because that wasn’t good for her, especially not now, and so she’d gone there with the aim of being supportive and helping her sister to stay calm and relaxed.

Lisa and John lived out beyond the clifftop cottages, so unless their mum was out that way, there was no chance of her seeing Stella heading there. Not that it would matter because Stella was perfectly entitled to have dinner with her sister and brother-in-law but she knew what her mum was like and she’d probably wonder why she hadn’t been invited too.

John opened the door wearing chinos and a shirt, something that made Stella pause. Often, when she came round to Lisa’s, they’d both be in their pyjamas or at least their loungewear, so she wasn’t sure why he was dressed so formally.

‘You expecting the Queen, John?’ she teased.

‘What?’ he frowned.

‘Well… you’re quite dressed up for a Friday night takeaway.’

‘Oh.’ His cheeks reddened. ‘Not the Queen, no.’

She followed him inside and closed the door behind her. ‘So not her majesty but someone special?’

He coughed as if to buy a moment to think. ‘Look, Stella… Please… uh… whatever you do, stay calm. I told Lisa that I wasn’t sure if this was a good idea, but she felt that it was now or never… what with her being pregnant and all, and so she… uh… decided to do it now.’

‘John, what on earth are you talking about? You’re really confusing me and worrying me.
