THE AMBULANCE was pulling out of the clinic driveway as I drove in. I entered the building and headed straight for the operating room. Dr. Snow didn’t perform many operations, normally smaller, noninvasive ones, but she had the skills to do whatever was needed.

“In here,” Jenna hollered from an examination room before I got to the OR. I ducked into the room and watched as she hooked Freddie up to an IV.

“How’s he doing?”

“I don’t see any outer signs of injuries,” she replied. “No appearances he was shot or stabbed and no bruises.” She turned his head to the side and pointed at a mark on his neck. “I’d say he was drugged, injected with something to knock him out. It had to have been pretty strong to keep him sedated this long. Whoever did it knew he was a shifter.”

“No surprise there,” I said. “How long do you think he’ll be out?”

She shrugged. “Anywhere between ten minutes and an hour. How long was he out there?”

“I don’t know. I don’t have a time of death for the twins yet, so it’s all up in the air.”

“Cameron and Calvin are dead?” She gasped and covered her mouth.

“Shit, I assumed the EMTs told you.” I sat and leaned forward. “Their bodies were found in Compton’s field.”

“Just like Steve and Ken?”

I nodded.

“Were their hearts missing?” Jenna was one of the other people in town who knew the truth about the murders nine years ago.

“I don’t know yet. Waiting to hear from Doc Northrup, but my assumption is yes.”

“I heard about two other bodies,” she said. “Are they connected?”

“I’m afraid so. I have no idea what I’m dealing with, but I figure it’s a copycat.”

“Who the hell would want to do that?”

“That’s the big question, isn’t it?”

“I never thought I’d be happy that all my sons aren’t in Seaside, but right now I’m praising Mother Earth they’re nowhere nearby.”

Jenna and her sons, Jordan, Broderick, and Xander, were wolf shifters. Her middle son, Broderick, had been a close friend of mine in high school and afterward.

“How’s Broderick doing?” I questioned.

She smiled, obviously proud of her son. “He’s doing well in California. He loves his job as a park ranger. It gives him hundreds of miles of land to run on in his time off.”

We chatted for another ten minutes until Freddie began to stir. He slowly opened his eyes, writhing and moaning in pain.

“Where… where am I?”

“The clinic.” I stood. “There’s been an accident.”

Emotional pain wracked Freddie’s body, and he clutched his chest. “Fuck, for a moment I thought it could’ve been a nightmare. I hoped so.”

“I’m sorry, Freddie. I really am.”

“My boys are dead, Dakota. Calvin and Cameron are gone.” Tears began to stream down his face, and he wiped at them with the back of his hand.

Jenna took Freddie’s hand. “Do you want me to call Sheila?”

“If you don’t mind, Jenna. You guys are friends.”

She patted his chest. “I’ll take care of it.”

I waited for Jenna to leave before saying, “I know this is a bad time, but I have to ask you a few questions.
