Jessy opened her eyes and wondered if she was imagining the broad naked back in front of her. It had the familiar mole and the distinct freckle pattern that she remembered, and she closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again to check.

“Bas?”

He mumbled something and rolled, sweeping her into his arms as he slept on, her face smashed against his chest. Gently she extracted herself and turned so that he was cradling her against him, spooning. She lay with her eyes open, remembering the sex on the couch and the way he’d invited her upstairs, undressing her and making love to her again twice before they’d fallen asleep with the rising of the sun.

He said he’d met her beast. It was a part of her, and she could feel him inside her as she lay quietly with Bas’s arms wrapped around her. She wondered if her beast was awake now, too. She thought he was. She closed her eyes and thought about speaking to him.

Hello.

Hello, Jessy.

Your name is whatever you make it.

What’s your name?

I am Jessy, too.

You’re male.

I am not male or female. I just am. You think of me as male because I represent male things to you.

That was exactly how Bas had described her beast. Her mind assigned him a gender because he represented strength, protectiveness and confidence. Jessy thought that merging with those traits might not be such a bad thing. She was sometimes timid and felt helpless, and having the strength and confidence to protect herself would be nice.

Why don’t I remember my life before?

Because you don’t want to remember it.

Was it so terrible?

Parts of it. But there are happy memories, too. Things you will need to know when the time comes for us to merge.

Will you help me remember?

When you’re ready. We will remember together.

Jessy snuck downstairs and crept into Gio’s room. She slid into the bed next to him and he woke, grinning at her as he made room for her next to him.

“Hello, doll.”

“I’ve missed you, G.” She lay facing him, her cheek on her hand. With her free hand she pushed the dark hair back from his face.

“I haven’t gone anyplace.”

“I thought you were dying.”

He chuckled and pulled her close, her head on his shoulder. “You know I’ve survived worse than this. It’ll take more than some silly sickness to put me down for good.”

Jessy knew he was thinking about the days and nights on the streets, sleeping at the shelter when there was room and in the alleys when there wasn’t. Panhandling for change to eat and begging, or worse, for scraps when the money was low. “I’m glad you’re getting better.”

“You knew I would. It’s why you came back to Bas, even though you swore you wouldn’t.”

Jessy sighed, and he lifted his head to look down at her.

“Something wrong, sweetie?”

“I’m not normal, G.”

He laughed. “I’ve known that forever.”

She swatted him. “I’m serious. We went to a gifted club tonight, and they said I’m not human.
