It was late afternoon when Katherine arrived at the towering office block which housed the headquarters of J.J. Engineering. Where the day had gone since Jordan had walked out of the flat that morning she had no idea. She had spent hours just staring blankly at the wall while she remembered everything they had said to one another, the way Jordan had looked before he left…

A shudder ran through her before she straightened her shoulders and walked through the glass doors. J.J. Engineering had its offices on the top two floors of the building so Katherine took the lift, her heart thundering as she ran through what she was going to say to Jordan. Whether he would be prepared to accept her apology or not was another matter.

Her eyes swam with sudden tears as the lift stopped. She made her way along the corridor towards Jordan’s office, then stopped to get a handkerchief out of her bag and wipe her eyes. She was vaguely aware of someone coming along the corridor behind her but she didn’t look round, not wanting anyone to see how upset she was.

‘Katherine? I thought it was you. What a lovely surprise…Good heavens, what’s wrong?’

Charles sounded alarmed as he saw her tears. He bent towards her, his face full of concern. ‘What’s happened, Katherine? You’re not feeling ill, are you?’

Katherine tried to smile, but it was impossible now that the floodgates had opened and tears were streaming down her face. She didn’t demur when Charles urged her into his office and closed the door. He seemed at a loss to know what to do as he patted her arm.

‘There, there, my dear. Surely it can’t be that bad?’

Katherine sniffed as she mopped her eyes. ‘I’m so sorry, Charles. It’s really inexcusable of me. It’s just that Jordan and I—’ Her voice broke as another sob racked her.

Charles’s mouth tightened. He drew her into his arms, his hand shaking as he stroked her hair. ‘I might have known Jordan was behind this! He really is a first-rate bastard. I don’t know why the hell you stay with him, Katherine!’

He drew back to stare into her face, and she was startled to see the anger in his usually mild brown eyes. ‘Leave him, Katherine! God knows, you aren’t happy with him; it doesn’t take much to work that out. Tell him that you’re leaving him and come away with me.’

‘Charles…’

Charles didn’t appear to notice her shock. His eyes were blazing now, his face suffused with sudden colour. ‘I love you, Katherine! You must know that. All I want is for you to be happy, and we could be. You and I could be so happy together!’

‘Charles…please!’ Katherine stared at him aghast. ‘Please, you’re making a dreadful mistake…’

Charles laughed harshly as he drew her to him and held her so close that Katherine could barely move. ‘The only mistake I’ve made is not telling you how I feel sooner! I should have made you leave Jordan months ago instead
