Ivy was leery when walking through the woods to the nursery. She’d never felt uncomfortable in the woods — it was her happy place growing up after all — but she kept checking over her shoulder as she cut through the heavy foliage. She’d walked the route so many times a path had been formed over the years, but it was hardly a smooth walk. The ground was rutted and leafy green things jutted out to brush her arms. Usually it didn’t bother her. She jumped a few times during this trek, though, and she was disappointed about it when she emerged at the nursery.

“There’s my girl.” Michael beamed at his daughter when he saw her. He’d finished the fern display the previous day — and it was seriously depleted now thanks to the information seekers who had dropped by for gossip on Misty — and had turned his attention to the potted begonias. “I’m thinking we have extras of these so we should try to move some today.”

“That sounds like a plan.” Ivy was listless as she went to the small refrigerator they kept in the cashier area and grabbed a bottle of water. “So, I have a question.”

“Uh-oh.” Michael straightened. “This doesn’t sound good. What did Jack do?”

“Nothing.” Ivy scowled. “Why do you always assume Jack did something?”

“I don’t always assume it. You’re married now, though. If thirty years of happy marriage have taught me anything, it’s that the man always does something.”

Ivy’s eye roll was pronounced. “Oh, don’t even. By the way, you’ve been married for thirty-two years.”

Michael winked at her. “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

“My question isn’t about Jack. He’s good. We’re good.”

“I’m glad. I would hate for you to turn into one of those Hollywood starlets who gets divorced after seventy-two hours. The town would never let that one go.”

“Jack and I are built for forever.”

Michael let loose a dramatic sigh. “I know that. I was teasing you. Apparently you don’t have a sense of humor today on top of that morose look on your face. What’s wrong?”

“So ... I did this thing.”

Michael’s eyebrows hopped. “Are you saying you’re the one who did something wrong?”

“Maybe.” Ivy shifted from one foot to the other, uncomfortable. “Jack and I went to the new bar out on the highway last night.”

Michael had no idea where she was going with the conversation, but he was all ears. “Okay.”

She told him about her night — and what led up to their little excursion — and when she got to the part about the privacy rooms at the back of the bar, Michael abandoned his project and drifted closer to her.

“What’s Jack thinking?” Michael’s mind was going a mile a minute. “Is he thinking a prostitution ring?”

“He says it could be multiple things, but I honestly think that’s what he’s leaning toward.”

“Well, that’s going to throw the town into a tizzy.” Michael shook his head in disbelief. “I can’t even believe that’s happening. I mean ... why would anybody get involved in that?”

“I don’t know.
