BRENT AWOKE with a start to a banging sound. Dimitri was already rising, grabbing a robe and calling, “Hang on!”

Brent stared around with blurred eyes. “Dimitri?”

“It’s okay. I think it’s just Zach.”

Dimitri disappeared out the door, and then Brent heard Zach’s anxious voice. “Have you seen Brent?”

Dimitri’s voice was reassuring. “He’s here.”

“Oh!” Zach sounded relieved.

Brent called out, “Hi, Zach.”

Zach’s head appeared around the bedroom door, and he looked at the discarded clothes and Brent sitting up in the middle of the bed, naked under the covers.

“Brent.” Zach’s voice sounded relieved and delighted.

“Yes, it’s me. Sorry, we didn’t want to wake you. Dimitri said this would be the first place you’d look.”

“Coffee, anyone?” Dimitri stuck his head in the door. His eyes were twinkling. Literally twinkling, dammit, thought Brent.

“Well, this is awkward,” said Brent, pulling the covers up to his chin as the other two looked at him. “But yeah, coffee sounds good.”

“I’ll put the machine on,” said Dimitri.

Brent had to hand it to Dimitri, he was handling the situation with aplomb.

Dimitri shut the door and Brent hunted around for his clothes on the floor. He was surprised at how far they were spread out from the door to the bed. He found one shoe under the bed. As he dressed quickly, he could hear Dimitri and Zach’s voices from the kitchen, and then the aroma of coffee crept under the bedroom door. Brent finished getting dressed, making his way over to the door. Taking a deep breath and saying a quiet prayer that Zach didn’t get too soppy over him and Dimitri getting together, he opened it.

Dimitri looked up and smiled. “Hi!”

Brent looked at Zach and decided to brazen it out. Hell, he and Dimitri had been practically caught in the act anyway. He walked over and put his hands on Dimitri’s shoulders, then kissed Dimitri when he looked up.

Dimitri watched him as he went to the bench and helped himself to a cup of coffee, and Zach said, “So, you two.”

“Zach,” said Brent in a warning tone.

“Aw, come on, Brent, I’ve been rooting for this to happen from day one! Let me have my hour in the sun, my ‘I told you so’ for once.”

Brent scratched his head. “Yeah, whatever.”

“No, really, I think it’s great!”

Brent looked apologetically at Dimitri. “He’ll be picking out Valentine’s cards for us both, for sure, come February.”

Zach laughed, and retorted, “But hey, look who knows what month Valentine’s is in. There’s a bit of romantic in you after all, Brent.”

Dimitri raised his eyebrows and said, “So, Zach, you’re completely okay with this?”

“Of course I am! I think it’s great!”

Brent sipped his coffee, then pulled a chair up next to Dimitri and sat down so their thighs pressed against each other under the table. “That’s good, because that saves me kicking your ass if you’re not.”

“Yeah, you and whose army?”

“Dimitri would help me. Wouldn’t you, Dimitri?”

“In anything but that.”

Brent pouted.
