CHAPTER THIRTY

In my dream, I walk in the aisles of the Tattered Cover, the sound of whispering coming from the shelves all around, Jim behind me.

Cecilia, wait.

I laugh and turn, and fall into his sweet, pale arms. He smells like talcum powder, clean and safe and warm.

When I pull back, Jim is gone, and I am myself, alone.

A book flies out from a shelf, and lands square in front of me. I lean down. The title of the book is Sharon. I examine the leather cover. There are ornate designs circling the front, and I pick it up.

A feeling of deep, overwhelming curiosity—and sadness—runs through me, as if I am about to uncover something tragic, something that’s going to expose the whole mystery of this thing, but just as I’m about to flip it open, I can hear the monster growling somewhere behind me. As I begin to run, the books flying out en masse, my panic growing, the books burying me, I scream as the monster approaches, the dead meat smell cloying, heavy, everywhere as it tears and tears and tears. First pages, then flesh. Mine.

I wake up.

My mother is in the window, in front of the curtains, staring at me.

“Cecilia,” I whisper.

She’s crying, the moonlight highlighting her face, her arm around something I can’t see. “Sharon,” she says, her voice breaking. “Sharon.”

I stare at her as she cries, wondering.

Something made me glance over at the clock. 11:47.

I look back, but she’s gone.
